Completion of the 35-hour course leads to certification under Massachusetts law, however, this is not a license to practice as a mediator. Most people who take the training find their views on conflict resolution are permanently changed and their inter-personal communication style much improved. Many find they use their mediating skills almost daily, in the dorm, in student groups, in the office, or just interacting with other people in everyday life. mediation@mit uses a co-mediator model with emphasis on a voluntary, private, and confidential process. Mediators act as third-party facilitators who are not judges, advocates, arbitrators, or counselors. They are trained to assist the people in conflict in a mediation process which allows disputants to determine a mutually-accepted outcome from looking at interests rather then positions (or why things happened rather than what happened). Mediation is a proactive way for parties to manage their conflicts. mediation@mit currently mediates student cases and so students and those who work directly with students are _particularly encouraged_ to apply. If you successfully complete the training and are certified, you may be invited to mediate for mediation@mit. Currently, over 60 people from all over campus have been certified through this training and are available to mediate -- 43% students, 31% people of color, over half men. MIT students can take the entire course for $40 ($20 if you are representing your living group). The cost for faculty and staff is $60. Both are incredible rates in comparison to the average of $600 for similar courses at other mediation centers. For people outside MIT, the fee is $350.
