(example topic: we might include discussion of the student-run component (1/3) of the proposed "$100k technology venture fund" i spoke very briefly about at the first meeting, and which i'm slowly developing a comprehensive plan for this term. details and discussion of the fund idea, it's roots in the "technology venture fund" at mit during the late-60's-early-70's, and how i've been envisioning it, is also appropriate for this list. that fund was a student pool that made seed funds available to student start-ups, on the order of $2k to $5k loans and outright investments. other details? anyone? (i'd also be glad to discuss in detail something about the kind and quality of mit alum i'm inviting to participate as fund designers and co-managers, to work along with students who would like to get their feet wet in new venture fund creation and management. some of the alum would also be investors and would help students in the review of proposals and plans. one way to think about this project is to imagine a larger-order-of-magnitude $10k competition running in the background year-'round, with rolling deadlines on perhaps a quarterly frequency, or maybe monthly.) back to the special session: the plan for a day-time, say lunch-hour special seminar meeting, would mean being able to include the maximum number of students faculty and staff from around the institute in the audience. self-selected seminar participants* will comprise a panel that addresses questions and comments to the deans, and the balance of the class should "sit-up-front" and offer additional spontaneous input. (* = volunteers :-) for a percentage of the term grade). we should have some on-line discussion of this project here as well, that is, on this list. so, not to be repetitious: please post your schedule suggestions, even if they indicate that the _regular_ meeting time would be better for some reason than a day-time, directly to this list by sending e-mail to and indicate if you'd like to participate on the panel, the "sit-up-front" group, or otherwise help pull this activity together. any tips on other institute events that might be in conflict on known dates would be a help. we'll probably hold this session in bartos theater, if it's available, or 6-120 or 10-250, at the mercy of the schedules office. thanks! secondly, because professor ed roberts' visit is important for setting the fundamental tone of the seminar this term, i'm trying to re-schedule him for as early in the term as he can make it. - r .
