Date: Wed, 09 Feb 94 19:09:58 EST (send subscription requests to and mention the new list "e-club-review" in the subject line. please do not send requests to the list "e-club" or to "e-club-request". thanks! - r) -------- to: all readers of the list "e-club"; re: new list to be created: "e-club-review", and purpose; (_jir_ reminder as example of announcement on new list) de: richard shyduroff, editor of the list "e-club"; 617-253-2000 numerous readers of the mit e-club's announcements-and-occasional-newsletter list "e-club", have indicated an interest in following the activities of mit clubs, groups and affiliates of the mit community involved in new and ongoing enterprises, ranging from no-tech to high-tech, around the institute, (as well as more closely, the activities and weekly meetings of the e-club, and reading of the club's own new projects and regular services). some of these projects' inventors, developers and or inheritors have formed their ideas and developed their products and services in the e-club "environment" (broadly interpreted, see note a) or they may have brought their mit-affiliated activities' and spin-off new-enterprises' current growth-and-development questions and concerns to the e-club for a simple clinic-like consultation or some directed assistance. such consulting and assistance ranges from the pretty fundamental `let's-think-out-loud-about-this-together' type, to e-club and member participation, and possibly collaboration, as it becomes evident that a project really is interesting, fun, has utility, is do-able, fundable, and of an interesting scale from a people-to-people or institution- to-institution networking perspective, and has relevance to the goals of the e-club's educational and start-up-assistance missions. currently there's sufficient interaction and development to warrant the creation of a separate list to keep all interested participants and observers informed of start-up news and reviews on these topics. the name of the new list shall be: "e-club-review" and it will cover a wide range of such e-club and member projects, including past and the current $10k student competition participants' own accounts of their entry stories, first-hand, plus guest review pieces based on new idea presentations at the e-club's regular weekly meetings, as well as news of alum members' spin-off projects and new technology start-ups, with some concentration on companies choosing to locate or stay in the commonwealth, and of course with additional focus on cambridge-based new businesses and related business start-up assistance programs. invited writers will include, from-time-to-time, students, faculty, staff and alum of mit and harvard, representing both universities and their respective entrepreneurs clubs' activities and members' projects and related support systems for entrepreneurs, as well as members of the area's venture capital and legal communities already formally involved with mit and harvard spin-offs and alum start-ups. other guest writers will include mit and harvard e-club alum who work behind the scenes in local and state government agencies and in legislative offices which would like to know more about how new technology-based business enterprises are created, and what must be done to make it easier for such spin-offs to get established and stay in massachusetts. nb: there shall also be humor (see reminder announcement below). the frequency of list publication is planned to be weekly, and will include short articles and a review of the new ideas presented that week at the regular tuesday meeting of the e-club (provided the presenters, on an individual basis, have agreed to allow the publication of such a review of their presentation). the best articles and reviews (to be determined by an editorial board and a panel of advisors) appearing on the list during a preceding quarter, shall be returned to the original authors for further development and the results shall be included in the proposed quarterly journal i've mentioned from time-to-time here and on other lists, to be called _the e-club review_. currently, _the e-club review_ is planned to be an electronic quarterly journal, with minimum availability in ascii format via the e-club's afs locker on mit's athena computing system, and via the e-club's public ftp archive site at "lcs.mit.edu", and to include occasional pieces and graphics in postscript. anyone with internet access shall at the least be able to read the journal, and beyond the ascii format, plans include a mosaic home page, of course, and a cd-rom product for distribution to other universities and schools, and k-12 schools and non-profit agencies without network connections, at nominal cost. future plans include a hard-copy version of the quarterly, in traditional academic journal design and format. a good and current example of an mit-affiliated group with which the e-club is pleased to announce it is collaborating to help develop ongoing and new activities and educational initiatives, is the _journal of irreproducible results_, designers and producers with the mit museum, of the annual ignobel awards project and ceremony held each fall term at kresge auditorium at mit. an example posting of an activity to the new list "e-club-review" follows: to: all geographically local members of the mit entrepreneurs club working on various aspects of new projects with the jir, and to those interested in knowing more about the jir and those looking for a good excuse to take a break from their work this evening; re: jir at the bookcellar cafe, tonight at 7:30pm; (forwarded) From: jir@MIT.EDU Subject: JIR event at the Bookcellar Cafe * Wed Feb 9
