Electron Microprobe Analysis by Wavelength Dispersive Spectrometry On JEOL JXA-733 Superprobe

Purpose This is an intermediate to advanced level, lab-oriented course for Electron Microprobe operators working with WDS. It is intended to familiarize the operator with the basic principles of X-ray Microanalysis and provide "hands-on" training and practical tips to efficiently operate an Electron Microprobe.

Course Outline

• Day 1 (Monday), Morning: Introduction to the theory of X-ray microanalysis including matrix corrections. Analysis of binary Fe-Ni samples by WDS to explore matrix effects.
  Afternoon: Types of scanning images: Backscattered Electron, Secondary Electron, X-ray and Cathodoluminescence. Topics such as Peak Overlap Corrections, and Light element analysis.
• Day 2 (Tuesday), Morning: Introduction to dQant32 and dPict32. Large area X-ray mapping by WDS and Backscattered Electron Imaging with dPict32.
  Afternoon: Fine tuning the JEOL-733 and tips on efficient operation.
• Day 3 (Wednesday), Morning: Different parts of the JEOL-733 and the WDS spectrometer and operation and maintenance tips.
  Afternoon: Tips on column cleaning, other maintenance and troubleshooting.

Location MIT is located on the northern bank of Charles River in the city of Cambridge. The Electron Microprobe Facility is in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. The instruments are housed on the twelfth floor.
