Korfas can not play anymore as Greek in Europe due to the French protest during
the national team European Championship in Zagreb. Stavropoulos is moved to the
point-guard position for the European games. Jones is replaced by Cook.
Bakopoulos, Hatzigeorgiou, and Thontsios are released. Boudouris, Mamatziolas,
Papahronis, and Papasarantou are acquired. Asteriathis is promoted from the
junior team.

IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS
7/10/89 Vrankovic, playing with 4 fouls and having been dominated by
BOXSCORE [1] Fasoulas up to this point, blocks Fasoulas 3 times during the
last minutes and PAOK loses 85-88 to Aris (Korfas 28).
Fasoulas, following Politis' directions, was forcing his shots
trying to make Vrankovic commit his 5th foul. But Politis
failed to realize that fouling out a key opponent may be a good
strategy in an earlier stage of the game but not the appropriate
focus of the team during the last crucial minutes.
11/11/89 PAOK loses 86-89 to Panionios (Prelevic 25). This loss is likely
to count in the post-season group games.
12/12/89 82-81 win in Mulhouse, with a basket at the last second (Prelevic
25). The design was for Prelevic to come off the screens and get
the ball from Stavropoulos who however took a wild shot which
bounced on the rim and fell in. It's our first ever win in a
European group away from home!
23/ 1/90 80-77 win against Real Madrid (Prelevic 28).
30/ 1/90 92-76 win against Mulhouse (Prelevic 41). PAOK advances for the
first time in our history to the semifinals of a European
competition.
3/ 2/90 PAOK cruises to a deceivingly easy 81-64 win against Aris
BOXSCORE [2] (Prelevic 24).
20/ 2/90 PAOK plays well in Bologna for the first leg of the semi-finals,
BOXSCORE [3] keeping the deficit below 10 points until the last minutes
when successive mistakes lead to a 57-77 blow-out (Fasoulas 15).
27/ 2/90 Knorr proves too tough for us to overcome the 20 point deficit.
BOXSCORE [4] PAOK wins 100-94 but Knorr advances to the final (Prelevic 30).
2/ 5/90 PAOK loses 110-115 in OT to Panionios in Athens and any hope for
winning the championship by splitting the two remaining games
with Aris is lost. PAOK has to win now both games.
5/ 5/90 But we can't win even the first one. Vrankovic pulls down 20
BOXSCORE [5] rebounds and Aris cruises to a 63-73 win (Prelevic 20). Aris is
Champion for the 6th straight year.
16/ 5/90 In a game without importance Ioannithis sits out Galis and
Vrankovic and PAOK wins easily 90-67 (Prelevic 22).
21/ 5/90 This time Galis is unstoppable and PAOK loses again to Aris
BOXSCORE [6] 62-75 for the final of the Greek Cup finishing the season in a
disappointing note (Stavropoulos 17). After the game
Stavropoulos complains to assistant coach Laios for not letting
him play more minutes and predicts changes in the coaching staff
before the next season! Laios denies he was making the
substitutions... Politis, once again, declares that PAOK played
a very bad game, while Ioannithis explains why he didn't use
Galis and Vrankovic in the previous game. At the coaching level
PAOK has been badly beaten.
The 88-89 season mistakes have been repeated: PAOK played all year long free and
fast basketball, a style that collapsed against Aris. And, even worse, this
year we lost easily both crucial games at the end of the season, while the year
before we were very close in 2 out of 3.
