Korfas still can not play as Greek in Europe. Thomas plays one (or rather half)
game against AEK and is immediately replaced by Barlow, a move that proved later
very good. Asteriathis, Karatzolithis, Melis, and Papasaravtou are released.
Ioannou, and Nick and Tom Katsikis are acquired. Valavanithis and Tsakiris are
promoted from the junior team.

Costas Politis resigns before the beginning of the season. Sakis Laios is
temporarily assigned the coaching responisbilities (5-1 record). Dragan Sakota
(29-8 record) becomes head-coach, and Laios his assistant.

IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS
6/10/90 85-89 loss to Aris in OT (Korfas 23). Barlow is newly arrived
BOXSCORE [1] but plays pretty well.
11/12/90 64-70 loss in Zaragoza (Prelevic 21). The low point deficit is
promising.
12/ 1/91 72-73 loss to Aris (Prelevic 18). Being down 32-49 at halftime,
BOXSCORE [2] we come back and we have the last shot to win the game.
Prelevic takes a short 2 but misses under pressure.
15/ 1/91 Despite the recent discouraging loss to Aris, PAOK plays a
great offensive game and beats Zaragoza 112-102 making a big
step towards the 1st place in the European Cup group (Prelevic
41).
29/ 1/91 Israel can not host any games due to the Kuwait war. Hapoel
Galil Elion is hosting PAOK in Athens (!), having lost 107-77 in
Alexanthrio. Despite the favorable conditions PAOK loses 79-80
(Fasoulas 24). Our fate lies in other hands but finally we
advance to the semi-finals winning the tie-break against Hapoel.
12/ 2/91 PAOK beats Dynamo Moskow 95-82 in the first leg of the
semi-finals (Prelevic 30). It's a very close game and the 13
point lead is gained during the last few minutes.
26/ 2/91 PAOK survives a big scare and holds on to a 63-75 loss in Moscow
(Prelevic 17). We advance for the first time to a European
final!
26/ 3/91 PAOK plays Zaragoza in Geneva for the final of the European Cup.
BOXSCORE & GAME At halftime PAOK is down 31-36 and Fasoulas has already 4 fouls,
PROFILE [3] most of which are due to bad calls by the refs, particularly
Cazzaro. With 14 minutes to go and the score tied 41-41 PAOK
fans, furious with the recent ejection of Fasoulas with 5 cheap
fouls, throw coins on the court when Papahronis is called for
his 4th foul, just seconds later. The Spanish players flee the
court and stay in the locker rooms while Fasoulas uses the
stadium speakers to calm down the crowd. After a long delay the
game starts again and it is tied at 49 when Papahronis is also
ejected with 5 fouls. Barlow has 4 fouls as well and PAOK's
defense has problems. Ioannou soon commits his 5th foul as well
and the 2 resulting free-throws give Zaragoza a 51-59 lead.
PAOK plays now without 3 key players and Sakota has to go to
Boudouris, his 8th player, to replace Ioannou. Zaragoza seems
to gain the upper hand but their players relax. On our side
PAOK players toughen their defense, with Boudouris over-playing
Davis. 2 point baskets by Barlow, heroic offensive rebounds
3 point bombs by Prelevic, one of which for a 4 point play, and
strict officiating that sends often PAOK players to the
free-throw line, allow PAOK to score 21 points in 11 possessions
despite missing 5 free-throws, to take a 72-70 lead! The
go-ahead basket is credited to Barlow but the goal-tending call
is questionable. With the game tied at 72 Makaras has his big
moment when he steals a pass intended for Davis who is called
for his 5th foul as he tries to get to the ball late. Barlow
makes 2 huge free-thows to give PAOK a 74-72 lead. Zaragoza
commits a back-court violation and PAOK gets the ball back.
Prelevic tries to do too much and loses the ball to Ruiz who
is alone on the fast-break going for the easy basket. But
Boudouris comes out of nowhere and forces Ruiz to an awkward
lay-up. PAOK gets the ball back and Barlow scores a basket
after he shuffles his feet. But the refs don't call the
traveling violation and PAOK is up by ! Zaragoza players
indulge in desperation 3 point shots and PAOK wins the European
Cup (Prelevic 31)! After the game Laios declares that PAOK is
the favorite to win the Greek Championship, despite being down
0-2 in the expected series against Aris.
30/ 3/91 It has been a habit for PAOK after big wins to have a
disappointing result. This time we barely survive in the
semi-final for the Greek Cup against PAO after being down 29-43
at halftime. PAO has possibly justified complains for a
non-call during the last seconds when Ioannou commits a rough
foul on Thimakopoulos but just an ordinary rather than an
intentional foul is called. Thimakopoulos pretends he is
seriously injured to be replaced by Kalambakos who makes both
1+1 free-throws and gives PAO a 73-76 lead with 15'' to go. But
Korfas scores a 3-pointer and he is fouled! He makes the
free-throw and PAOK wins 77-76 (Prelevic 27)!
10/ 4/91 PAOK is the favorite in the final of the Greek Cup against
BOXSCORE [4] Panionios. But the game is played in Athens and PAOK loses the
game 70-73 and along with it another Greek title (Barlow 20).
In the other 4 games against Panionios for the 90-91 season,
PAOK had 4 wins with an average point differential of 25+ points
(closest win by 8) but we lost the most important one!
27/ 4/91 PAOK beats Aris 84-79 and Aris lead in the series is cut to 1-2
BOXSCORE [5] (Prelevic 21, Fasoulas 19).
2/ 5/91 PAOK beats Aris 74-65 in OT and ties the series 2-2 (Barlow 23,
BOXSCORE [6] Fasoulas 16).
4/ 5/91 This is the game that epitomizes our losses to Aris and opens a
BOXSCORE [7] series of events over a 2 year period that will influence PAOK
for several years to come. PAOK is up 51-45 at halftime and
Aris has never gained the lead since then. With 16'' to go
Korfas makes both 1+1 free-throws and PAOK leads 80-76.
Yannakis goes coast-to-coast with Korfas and Fasoulas making too
much way to avoid fouling him and Yannakis makes an uncontested
lay-up. With 9'' to go Barlow inbounds the ball below PAOK's
basket. Initially, his primary targets, Korfas and Prelevic,
are well guarded. But eventually they free themselves from any
pressure, Korfas from the left side, standing a couple of meters
away from Barlow, and Prelevic from the right. But Barlow has
already made-up his mind! He throws a long, stupid pass to
Fasoulas at mid-court! Aggelithis steps in front of Fasoulas
and steals the ball. He passes immediately to Galis who closes
to the 3-point line and jumps in front of Stavropoulos who
stands with his arms extended high without moving to avoid the
foul. Galis doesn't shoot but passes back to Yannakis who, from
7 meters away and despite the effort by Prelevic to block or at
least distract him, sinks the 3-pointer at the last second
giving an 85-86 improbable win to Aris (Korfas 28). Fasoulas
who had an off night offensively scoring no points is the
recipient of most of the blame from the fans.
8/ 5/91 PAOK has a 77-68 lead with a few minutes to go but blows it.
BOXSCORE [8] With 17'' to go, Aris has the ball and a 2 point deficit.
Yannakis drives to the basket and at the last moment passes the
ball to cutting Sellers who lays it in after getting fouled low
by Prelevic (some claim the foul was charged to Fasoulas
although he apparently did not even touch Sellers). Sellers
makes the free-throw and the last desperation shot by Papahronis
doesn't find its target. Stavropoulos was free under Aris'
basket but Papahronis probably thought there was not enough time
to pass. Aris wins 80-81 and is Champion for the 7th straight
year (Prelevic 29). Galis, showing lack of sportsmanship,
verbally attacks Prelevic and the two players have a fight,
Fasoulas and Yannakis intervene, and the latter consoles
Prelevic for his good but short of success effort. This fight
resulted in a 3 game suspension for both players applicable at
the beginning of the next season, which proved detrimental for
Aris. But the result of the game brought naturally tension in
PAOK's ranks. Fasoulas had again an off night offensively,
scoring 4 points. This time he was a direct participant in the
loss of the lead by missing critical 1+1 free-throws at 80-76
and by inbounding the ball out of bounds with 17'' to go. The
replay shows that the intended recipient of the pass, Prelevic,
was tripped by Subotic and as a result of that he didn't catch
the pass; but this escapes any attention in the fury of the
situation. The fans find in Fasoulas the expiatory victim
blaming him for the 2 losses and forgetting his prolific scoring
in the first 2 games of the series and his overall deffensive
contributions.
Fasoulas asks to be traded because he has psychological problems playing under
these conditions and claims he will never play again for PAOK in Alexanthrio.
Rumors predict a trade with Papathakos, which would certainly favor OSFP, while
PAOK fans collect signatures demanding that Fasoulas leaves PAOK! All this
turmoil will subside during the summer as Ivkovic becomes the new coach and
Filippou, a very close friend of Fasoulas, is acquired from Aris in exchange of
Ioannou.
