IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS

Aris brings Walter Berry who has a bad fame for his lack of commitment on defense. Aris' financial problems and perhaps the incompatibility of Galis and Berry lead to a split. Berry playing for OSFP, PAOK, and Iraklis in later years will prove that he could have made a tremendous difference for Aris. 5/10/91 71-74 loss to Pagkrati, as Prelevic is serving part of his 3-game suspension due to a fight with Galis after the end of the last PO game of the 90-91 season (Korfas 19). 3/12/91 71-73 loss to Glaxo Verona in Thessaloniki (Prelevic 29). Finishing first in the group, which for the first time is rewarded with home-court advantage in the semi-finals, becomes a difficult feat. But this loss marks the beginning of a 34 month period and 22 game stretch during which PAOK will win every international game in Thessaloniki! 7/12/91 PAOK beats OSFP 80-68 in SEF (Prelevic 26). 11/12/91 PAOK beats Limoges 81-79 in France (Barlow 23). Glaxo Verona loses to Alba in Berlin. 21/12/91 PAOK plays Aris whose fans are singing "Me ton Gali, ton BOXSCORE & GAME Yannaki, ton Fasoula kie t'alla pethia...", rubbing-in the PROFILE [1] losses in the last 2 PO games of the previous season and deepening the gap in the relationship between Fasoulas and PAOK fans as they do not particularly react to this insult. Ivkovic replaces Fasoulas with Filippou for the last 2 minutes of the game, presumably to avoid "another" turnover by Fasoulas. PAOK is leading by 10 with 1'36'' to go but our defense without Fasoulas has become vulnerable to the experienced Aris players. Two very bad non-calls by the refs, one on a foul by Lipirithis on Prelevic that led to a back-court violation, and another on a Galis' traveling violation, help Aris tie the game. Prelevic misses the lay-up and Filippou the follow as regulation time expires. The OT starts. PAOK scores first but Aris gets the lead for the first time in the game! The lead changes hands another 4 times and Aris leads 93-94 with less than a shotclock to go. Korfas is handling the ball and amazingly the usually tough Aris defense concentrates too much on the painted area thus giving a totally uncontested, granted from 7 meters, 3 point shot to Korfas. But this is within Korfas' range and PAOK leads 96-94 with 10'' to go. Yannakis rushes down the floor and passes to Aggelithis who takes a 3 point shot! Oh, God, not again! We relive the nightmare of Yannakis last-second 3-pointer in the 5th game of the previous season. The ball bounces on the rim and falls in the hands of Yannakis who shoots immediately over the extended hand of Fasoulas who tries to block him. Yannakis calls glass and the game is tied with 3.5'' to go. The TV commentator announces the 2nd OT. Ivkovic takes naturally a time-out and calls for a long pass to Barlow. Memories from the 5th game of the previous season against Aris resurface and Boudouris argues that Aris could steal the ball. Ivkovic changes the plan immediately: short pass to a guard, cross-court, and long shot. Boudouris inbounds to Prelevic who covers fast the distance to mid-court under the pressure of Subotic. He takes 2 steps, landing at the second with both feet, and shoots. The time expires as the ball is in the air. Prelevic is soon lost in a sea of hugs and PAOK wins 99-96 in OT (Prelevic 31)! Yannakis congratulates Prelevic but Aris is furious for 2 non-calls during the OT. The first when Korfas stepped on the line before scoring a 2 point basket to give PAOK a 93-92 lead, and the second, according to their opinion, when Prelevic traveled before scoring the winning 3-pointer after the time had already expired. The replay clearly shows they are right in the case of Korfas. But also shows that the shot by Prelevic was on time. Did he take extra steps? Rigas, the top Greek official and one of the 2 officials in this game was adamant: players can even take both steps landing each time on both feet, like a kangaroo! But that is not the problem, as players who slam on the fast break very often jump with both feet at the second step. The problem is whether both Prelevic' feet landed together at the last step. The replay is not conclusive but it seems that the feet did land with a tiny time lag. In any case, Aris had got favorable calls at the end of regulation that put them in the game, so they had not any ground for complaining. This game was the beginning of Aris' demise within the Greek borders as Aris was already moving downhill since the previous season in the European Championship. 7/ 1/92 PAOK beats with difficulty Alba Berlin 83-79 in Thessaloniki (Prelevic 20, Fasoulas 19). Ivkovic has been furious since the theory preparation session when he caught Papahronis dosing-off. He sends him home and probably makes up his mind that the player will be expendable during the next trade season. 21/ 1/92 PAOK beats Glaxo in Verona 76-75 (Prelevic 24). It's the first win ever by a Greek team in an official game in Italy! However the feelings are mixed since PAOK did not cover the 2 point deficit from the first game due to a mistake by Filippou during the last seconds. Now PAOK has to remain undefeated to assure home-court advantage in the semis. 20/ 2/92 PAOK loses in Liubliana 68-81 to Olimpia in the first game of the best-of-3 semifinal (Prelevic 29). 25/ 2/92 PAOK beats easily Olimpia 79-61 (Prelevic 24). 27/ 2/92 PAOK cruises to a 104-86 triumph and advances to the final of the European Cup for the second year in a row (Barlow 20)! 7/ 3/92 Subotic is on fire and PAOK loses easily to Aris 65-82 (Barlow BOXSCORE [2] 18). The extent of the defeat is shocking but the usual excuse that the team is concentrating on an upcoming game, which in this case is final of the European Cup against Real Madrid, relieves the tension. Ivkovic promises to study the game and rectify the errors committed by the team. 17/ 3/92 Real leads 28-42 at halftime, Fasoulas being the only player who BOXSCORE [3] put up some resistance, scoring mainly from outside his usual range. At the second half Prelevic takes over the offense, while Fasoulas dominates on defense. PAOK comes back and Prelevic ties the game with a 3-pointer from 8 meters for the first time in the second half with less than a shotclock to go. Real takes a time-out and Ivkovic, allegedly, gives the order not to foul. Simpson (who played for PAOK during the 85-86 season) gets the ball and Boudouris guards him closely and the refs call a foul sending Simpson to the line for 1+1 with 9'' to go. He misses the first and Fasoulas gets yet another rebound. PAOK has a chance to win as all players start heading towards Real's basket. All but Brown who steps suddenly back and interecepts Fasoulas' oulet pass to Boudouris. Brown takes the jumper over the extended hand of Fasoulas who tries to correct his mistake in vain. The ball goes in and PAOK has only the time for a desperation shot. Real wins the final 63-65 and the almost-hero Fasoulas has become the dramatic figure of the night as Prelevic lies on the court (Prelevic 29, Fasoulas 17). PAOK fans stay supportive of the team and Fasoulas. But the shadow of the turnover remains. Memories from previous seasons games mingle with this game's final act and stereotype for many PAOK fans an image of Fasoulas being responsible for losing games at the end. Barlow's 2/11 from the field and 0/2 from the line shooting does not become even an issue! Soon most PAOK fans will remember only Fasoulas' last turnover and will forget the 17 points, the 11 rebounds, and the 6 blocks... 23/ 3/92 PAOK beats Aris 99-93 braving a counter-attack by Aris at the BOXSCORE [4] last minutes (Korfas 24, Barlow 24). Fasoulas slam-dunks and then kicks the ball and along with it the haunting past away. He gets a technical but it's too late for another nightmare. 4/ 4/92 Fasoulas has 14 points and pulls down 22 rebounds to lead PAOK BOXSCORE [5] to a crucial 88-77 win against Aris (Prelevic 25). This was the knock-out punch that eventually led to Aris' elimination from the European Championship and abdication from the top of Greek basketball, as Galis would not continue playing for Aris. 11/ 4/92 PAOK is assured of a 3-1 lead in the final. The question is against what team! If PAOK beats OSFP in SEF, then we will face Aris in the final. If we lose then we'll face OSFP and Aris will not participate in next year's European Championship, for the first time since 1984! OSFP plays the efforts of a whole year in one game. The officials help OSFP and the apparently indifferent PAOK loses 75-78 (Prelevic 23). Did the players, or at least some of them, preferred to lose the game fearing a 0-3 comeback by Aris? It's possible, but what is certain is that they didn't have a strong incentive to win the game. This win gave OSFP the opportunity to participate in the following season's European Championship and accelerated the transfer of several good players from Thessaloniki to Athens. 22/ 4/92 PAOK plays again OSFP in SEF leading 3-1 in the finals. PAOK BOXSCORE [6] wins easily 97-82 over a team that didn't put up much of a fight apparently being content with the 2nd place (Fasoulas 24). We are Champions for the 2nd time in our history! 9/ 5/92 PAOK loses 74-77 to AEK and does not advance to the final of the Greek Cup to face Aris (Prelevic 26).
