Prelevic is also cleared to play as Greek in Europe (first time ever) freeing the spot for a second foreign player, Levingston, who is acquired to play in both the European Championship and the Greek League as the latter allows 2 foreign players for the first time. Papahronis is released to Iraklis in exchange for Tsekos. Asteriathis, Makaras, Stavropoulos, Thimakopoulos, and Tsakiris are alos released in a massive restructuring operation orchestrated by Ivkovic. The non-unconditional release of Stavropoulos shows disrespect to his big contributions to the team since 1983. Papahronis' trade is of questionable value, because despite his bad technique and unpredictable behavior that could occasionally hurt the team, he was a strong player who knew how to move without the ball very well and a fiercful competitor. But his personality was obviously incompatible with Ivkovic's demands. Baloyannis is acquired. Koukouvitskas is promoted from the junior team.

CAPTAIN

Panos Fasoulas in his 13th year with PAOK.

COACH

Dusan Ivkovic with a 42-14 season record.

PRESIDENT

Nikos Vezirtzis for the 9th straight year.

IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS

Harrison, a player that performed very well for Pagkrati during the previous season, is signed to play as the 2nd foreign player but he gets injured in the pre-season. The search for a replacement results in signing Cliff Levingston
Cliff Levingston
of the Chicago Bulls. Suddenly, PAOK, with Fasoulas at center, two first-class Americans, Levingston and Barlow, at the forward spots, and Prelevic and Korfas playing as Greeks at the guard spots, becomes a super-power in Europe. There are only two problems: both Americans perform better as power rather than small forwards; and the release of Makaras, Papahronis, and Stavropoulos has left PAOK with limited help coming from the bench. At the same time Aris has signed Tarpley, an excellent player even by NBA standards but with past drug use
Roy Tarpley
problems, and has released Galis who now plays for PAO. OSFP has signed Higgins, but they will soon replace him with Walter Berry. FIBA places Red Star Belgrade in PAOK's group which, after the UN embargo on Yugoslavia, will include only 7 teams. 4/10/92 Levingston arrives shortly before the game against Aris and he is the best player for PAOK. But his efforts are not enough to prevent a humiliating 56-88 loss to Aris (Levingston 16). Apparently his presence has damaged the chemistry of the team while Aris seems unbeatable with Tarpley. 11/10/92 PAOK beats PAO 79-74 (Prelevic 23, Fasoulas 19). Galis seems to have lost his magic touch. 14/10/92 New humiliating defeat, this time to Iraklis 65-81 (Barlow 19). The players meet after the game to talk it out. 17/10/92 PAOK beats Panionios 73-57 (Levingston 20, Barlow 20). 29/10/92 PAOK loses in Pesaro 70-80 (Levingston 19). 31/10/92 PAOK loses in Peristeri 75-83 (Prelevic 27). Something is definitely very wrong. Levingston leaves for the US to receive his NBA Championship ring a few days before the decisive game against Limoges. 5/11/92 The later European Champions fight hard but PAOK wins 67-57 with a strong effort in the final minutes and despite the absence of Levingston (Prelevic 23). Ivkovic surprised everybody by starting Kouklakis who, nevertheless, was not a big factor in the game. 22/11/92 PAOK beats OSFP 74-68 (Prelevic 24). Back-to-back wins against the unlikely European and Greek champions to be. 3/12/92 The good results are interrupted by a disappointing 81-85 loss to Maccabi, which is one of the weakest teams in the group, in Tel-Aviv (Prelevic 29). 10/12/92 An unexpected awesome game by PAOK results in a turn-around 75-64 win in Bologna (Prelevic 27). PAOK becomes one of the favorites for the 2 top spots in the group. 17/12/92 A silly foul by a Spanish player gives the opportunity to Levingston to make 2 free-throws at the last second of the game and PAOK beats Jovendut Badalona 83-81 (Korfas 21, Prelevic 20, Levingston 20). 30/12/92 Aris plays without Tarpley who is injured and/or has financial problems with the team, but despite that puts up a good effort. The game is close until the last minutes when PAOK opens a big lead and wins 71-59, despite Aris defense shutting down our strong front court (Prelevic 36, Korfas 19). 3/ 1/93 The new year begins with a huge 78-72 win in Athens against PAO BOXSCORE [1] (Prelevic 28). PAOK is up 72-70 and the officials charge Levingston with a ridiculous offensive foul, his 5th, committed when Levingston, after giving a pass, lost his balance and fell backwards, probably being tripped by an opponent. With 10'' to go PAOK is up 74-72 and Alvertis fouls Prelevic from behind as Prelevic starts a fast-break. The officials charge Alvertis with an intentional foul and PAO protests intensely with the excuse that a similar call was made by the same referees at the last seconds of the first round game in Alexanthrio. But the questioned call did not make much of a difference as Prelevic finished the game with 13/13 from the line and it was unlikely that PAO would have closed even a 4 point differential in 10''. PAOK has won fair and square. 6/ 1/93 The triumphant week concludes with a big 82-71 win against Cibona in Zagreb (Levingston 23). PAOK is now the big favorite for one of the 2 top spots and the home-court advantage in the pre-semis. 14/ 1/93 PAOK survives through double OT to beat Scavolini Pesaro 69-65 BOXSCORE [2] (Prelevic 25). The Italians rightfully complain for Jeanoline's
Haywoode Workman
decision that a foul committed by Levingston at the last second of the first overtime occurred after the time had expired. 17/ 1/93 66-74 loss to Panionios in Athens (Prelevic 29, Korfas 21). 20/ 1/93 PAOK loses 58-60 in Limoges (Prelevic 20). 4/ 2/93 PAOK beats Maccabi Tel-Aviv 78-63 (Barlow 18, Levingston 17). 11/ 2/93 PAOK wins the most crucial game against Knorr Bologna 64-62 with great difficulty (Prelevic 22). Korfas wins a huge jumpball during the last minutes from a much taller Italian. 13/ 2/93 PAOK cruises to a 45-27 first-half lead in SEF against OSFP. They close the game, but PAOK finally wins 85-71 (Korfas 27, Prelevic 21). At the second half Ioannithis in a memorable theatrical gesture tended his jacket to an official protesting for his calls. 17/ 2/93 PAOK loses 71-84 in Badalona in a game that is thought to be expendable (Korfas 19). 25/ 2/93 PAOK finishes first in the group by beating Cibona 81-67 (Prelevic 30, ..., Fasoulas 0). The bad relations between Ivkovic and Fasoulas start to surface. 11/ 3/93 Orthez is no match for PAOK in the first pre-semi played in Pau. PAOK cruises to an 103-86 win (Prelevic 30). Ivkovic goes with Tsekos against Muresan and Fasoulas, who scores 17 in limited minutes including a last minute 3-pointer, is upset with Ivkovic whose offensive plans have ignored him in favor of the 2 guards and the 2 Americans throughout the season. 16/ 3/93 PAOK beats Orthez 81-65 and advances to the final-4 (Levingston 19). 29/ 3/93 The euphoria period ends with a big 57-68 loss to PAO in Athens for the Greek Cup (Levingston 25, Fasoulas 13). Another argument erupts between Ivkovic and Fasoulas who complains for the indifference some other players have shown in this game. 5/ 4/93 PAOK beats Iraklis 88-80 in Ivanofio and advances to the final-4 of the Greek Championship (Prelevic 19, Levingston 18, Fasoulas 17, Mamatziolas 17). 13/ 4/93 PAOK plays Benetton Treviso in SEF for the semi-final without BOXSCORE [3] Tsekos who has been recently injured in an auto accident, fortunately not seriously. PAOK leads 68-61 when Iacopini hits 4/4 3-pointers to give a 71-73 lead to the Italian team. The game is tied 77-77 with 36'' to go and PAOK has the ball. Prelevic overlooks Korfas, who is spotting just outside the 3-point line completely unguarded as all Benetton players have converged in the painted area, and takes a difficult shot from the foul line in front of the much taller Kukoc and misses badly with 12'' to go. On the other side of the floor Kukoc does not imitate Prelevic: he attracts the defense and passes to
Tony Kukoc
Ragazzi who sinks the long 2 with less than 3'' to go. PAOK loses 77-79 and the dream ends abruptly (Prelevic 21, Levingston 18). Some people will blame the refs who indeed favored Treviso in calling or not calling fouls, others will blame Prelevic, who finished the game with negative TENDEX, for being too selfish at the last crucial possessions, others will blame Fasoulas who had early foul problems and was unable to limit Rusconi on defense. However, his teammates were partially responsible for that, as Fasoulas was helping them when they lost the player they guarded, but he did not receive any help from them on Rusconi. 15/ 4/93 A disappointed PAOK team beats 76-70 an equally disappointed BOXSCORE [4] Real Madrid (Barlow 20). PAOK fans express their anger against FIBA and the refs for their supposed role in Tuesday's defeat and leave the stadium in protest before the final game between Limoges and Benetton Treviso. 20/ 4/93 OSFP has advanced to the final-4 by eliminating Aris with the BOXSCORE [5] help of the officials. Later rumors will say that everyone in the team, including Ioannithis, did not consider it was possible to eliminate PAOK. Everyone except Walter Berry. Sigalas and Tomic play very good defense on Prelevic and Korfas, who both later finish the game with negative TENDEX, and OSFP leads at halftime 19-28 in Alexanthrio against the disappointed PAOK players and fans. PAOK closes to 43-45 and 46-48 but both times OSFP responds with 3-pointers by Tomic and Paspalj. PAOK suffers a humiliating and unexpected 48-57 defeat and OSFP steals the home-court advantage (Levingston 20). 27/ 4/93 After splitting the next 2 games with OSFP, PAOK plays OSFP in SEF with the back on the wall. At halftime we are down 24-29 and Fasoulas tries to encourage the team. But he ends up arguing with Prelevic who sits out the second half with an injury and PAOK loses 49-59 (Korfas 18). 11/ 5/93 After splitting 2 games with Panionios, PAOK wins the 3rd game 77-71 and the series for the 3rd place (Barlow 25). This series seemed without any importance whatsoever at the time, and in the wake of Jankovic's serious injury all games were played in Thessaloniki, with both Prelevic and Fasoulas not playing a single minute for PAOK. But the outcome of the series probably affected the group assignments for the 93-94 Korac Cup. A season that started very bad and developed to the most promising ever for PAOK ended in defeat on all fronts: elimination from the Greek Cup in the pre-semis, loss in the semi-finals of the European and Greek Championships. Despite all that, PAOK reached this season the highest place in European basketball in the history of the team; and was left out of next year's European Championship only thanks to the unreasonable system of the Greek POs: having finished 1st and beaten PAO twice during the regular season and having exactly the same results with PAO in the final-4, PAOK yet finsihed 3rd behind PAO who made it to next year's European Championship! All this because the final-4 system has been designed for the case when only the 1st position counts, but, of course, Greek basketball officials are not concerned with such "unimportant" details. In the aftermath of all these eliminations PAOK is in deep financial trouble. Vezirtzis, ready to hand the presidency over to Ikonomithis, has not paid Fasoulas according to his contract, probably hoping he will pass the debt to his successor, although it's likely that arrangements were done with the approval of Ikonomithis. Fasoulas, bitter with the loss of all team goals, the bad treatment by Ivkovic, the disrespect by the fans, and the attitude of PAOK's officials, files for a breach of contract. PAOK can still keep the player but the officials prefer to try force Fasoulas to leave the team or accept a substantial cut in his big contract. Fasoulas wins the case in court and when nobody approaches him from PAOK to negotiate a new contract he signs with OSFP. Most PAOK fans, led by the fuming press, the bad blood in their relationship with the player, and their sorrow for the disappointing end of the season, blame almost exclusively Fasoulas for tricking PAOK officials by letting them believe he would not seek his due payment in court. But the only logical explanation for what happened, as it is well established that PAOK could keep the player by paying just 28 million drachmas even after Fasoulas went to court, is that PAOK did not really want to keep Fasoulas, probably due to his very large contract which would be difficult to cover playing in the Korac Cup; and either due to wrong judgement by PAOK officials, or to their effort to avoid the responsibility associated with the loss of the player, or because something happened under the table, PAOK failed -at least apparently- even to gain anything by trading Fasoulas. What should have been at least a big financial scandal went unnoticed in the transition to a new administration while the oldest player and captain of the team, who, despite his shortcomings, had led PAOK from obscurity to the European final-4 through the many years of Aris' domination, left the team in animosity. Going to OSFP, Fasoulas would contribute to the shift of balance of the whole Greek basketball structure to Athens.
