Barlow and Levingston are replaced by Savic and Berry. Fasoulas, Filippou, Nick
Katsikis, and Koukouvitskas are released. Galakteros, Rentzias, Takianos, and
Yannoulis are acquired. Kotsopoulos is promoted from the junior team.
CAPTAIN
Bane Prelevic in his 6th year with PAOK.
COACHES
Dusan Ivkovic (17-3 season record) is replaced by Soulis Markopoulos, (26-9
season record) when Ivkovic seeks legally the timely payment of his salary.
PRESIDENT
During the off-season Apostolos Ikonomithis replaces Nikos Vezirtzis who has
been president for the last 9 years.
IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS
PAOK fans threaten to scale their demonstrations related to the trade of
Galakteros to PAOK during the Thessaloniki International Fair. The government
officials succumb to the political pressure and release the player from AEK.
2/10/93 73-76 loss to Panionios (Berry 21, Prelevic 21). PAOK puts
together an impressive comeback at the second half but comes up
short. Galakteros has a disappointing game.
31/10/93 PAOK beats PAO 72-64 (Prelevic 23).
17/11/93 In the replay of a game that was interrupted due to a power
outage, PAOK loses to Peristeri 84-85 after a dramatic finish
(Prelevic 26, Berry 23). PAOK is up by 9 points with less than
50'' to go. Milonas hits a 3 and reduces our lead to 6. PAOK
misses a shot and Milonas hits another 3 to reduce our lead to
3. Prelevic gets clearly fouled but the officials are the only
ones who don't see it. We foul Fasouras immediately to avoid
another 3 and he goes to the line for 1+1. He makes the first
and misses the second, Peristeri gets the rebound and Milonas
hits yet another 3! PAOK misses the last shot and Peristeri
wins. This unexpected and improbable loss will later contribute
to the loss of the home-court advantage to OSFP. It will
remain, along with the 2 last PO games against Aris in the
1990-1991 season, as one of the worst last-minute turn-around
losses in the history of the team.
24/11/93 PAOK beats Caja San Fernando 87-82 in Spain (Prelevic 26, Berry
22).
30/11/93 PAOK leads with as many as 13 points in the first half and with
26'' to go PAOK is still ahead 74-72 when Korfas, following
Ivkovic's instructions, fouls Portalupi who makes both
free-throws and ties the game. All the time left belongs to
PAOK, but Prelevic takes the shot with 7'' to go! He misses
giving the chance to Portalupi for a coast-to-coast and the
winning basket. PAOK loses to Recoaro 74-76 but despite the
loss, the small point differential gives hope for the first spot
in the group (Berry 35).
5/12/93 PAOK beats OSFP 84-71 in Alexanthrio (Prelevic 23, Savic 20,
Berry 19). It's the first game ever for Fasoulas against PAOK
and the selectively forgetful fans have a party.
8/12/93 PAOK beats KK Zagreb 84-70 (Berry 28).
11/12/93 PAOK beats Aris 83-76 (Prelevic 23, Berry 20).
15/12/93 PAOK beats Caja San Fernando 92-89 (Berry 26, Prelevic 22).
22/12/93 PAOK beats AEK 72-62 after a pretty bad game (Berry 26). It's
the last official game for Ivkovic as PAOK's coach, at least for
a few years to come.
5/1/94 During the holidays Dusan Ivkovic has filed an official petition
against PAOK for not getting paid his salary on time.
Ikonomithis pretends to be furious and releases him from PAOK,
while Ivkovic, obviously stunned, says that he was misled by his
lawyer and apologizes. Ikonomithis accepts Ivkovic's apology
but finds in the incident a good excuse to decrease the salary
of the highly paid coach. Of course Ivkovic refuses to accept
and Ikonomithis replaces him with his assistant, Soulis
Markopoulos, who now coaches PAOK for the first time in one of
the most crucial games of the season against Recoaro Milano in
Thessaloniki. Both teams shoot bad from the free-throw line
but the Italians are worse, especially during the last minutes.
PAOK wins 71-67 and has the advantage in a potential tie-break
with Recoaro (Berry 22). However the same day KK Zagreb
surprisingly beats Caja San Fernando in Spain and a 3-way tie
with advantage to Recoaro will occur if PAOK loses in Zagreb.
9/ 1/94 PAOK beats Iraklis 87-68 in Ivanofio after a dominating second
half (Berry 22).
12/ 1/94 PAOK beats KK Zagreb 91-77 in Zagreb and wins the group (Berry
30).
16/ 1/94 PAOK beats Panionios 88-69 and everything seems to go well for
Markopoulos and his players, as PAOK is on a 10 win streak
(Berry 20, Perlevic 20).
22/ 1/94 Out of nowhere comes a devastating 76-86 loss to Pagkrati
(Prelevic 24, Berry 18, Korfas 18). The players had probably
their mind on the upcoming game in Pesaro for the Korac Cup, but
this is not an adequate excuse for a loss that would later cost
the team the home-court advantage in the PO finals!
26/ 1/94 Berry and Prelevic have both very poor offensive games for the
first time this season and PAOK suffers another devastating
66-82 loss to Scavolini in Pesaro (Boudouris 15). Given the
extent of the loss and last year's very difficult win in double
OT in Alexanthrio, it seems very difficult to beat Scavolini by
more than 16 points and advance to the Korac Cup semi-finals.
2/ 2/94 A relatively close game at the first half will bring a triumph
for PAOK in the second. With the officials materializing the
home-court advantage at crucial moments during the first half
and with everything going right for us, PAOK opens up a big lead
in the second half that soon exceeds the 16 point differential.
The Italians break down and give up their efforts. PAOK
dominates the game completely and cruises to a huge 96-58 win
that brings the team to the semi-finals of the Korac Cup
(Prelevic 23, Berry 22, Savic 19).
12/ 2/94 PAOK gets another huge 77-73 win in Athens against PAO despite
BOXSCORE [1] trailing 66-73 with 1'20'' to go (Berry 20, Prelevic 20). PAO
complains about a non-call when PAO led 72-73 but, despite what
the Athenian press will insist on, the replay clearly shows that
Prelevic did not take extra steps before Vrankovic committed a
flagrant foul on him as he didn't have posession yet when the
first of the 3 steps took place. And, nevertheless, the
officials have rather favored PAO during the game!
16/ 2/94 Turner is on fire and PAOK is down by as many as 19 points to
BOXSCORE [2] Panionios during the first half of the first Korac Cup
semi-final. But with an amazingly calm game, Turner tired, and
Baloyannis making shots at the most crucial moments, PAOK gets
back in the game and pulls a fantastic 85-83 win (Berry 25, ...,
Baloyannis 12). This result all but assures our advancing to
the finals, as Panionios traditionally does not play well in
Alexanthrio.
23/ 2/94 Despite being down at halftime, PAOK beats easily Panionios
82-64 and advances to the finals of the Korac Cup (Galakteros
22, Berry 19, Korfas 18).
9/ 3/94 Stefanel starts the game with a 2-10 run but PAOK responds with
BOXSCORE & GAME a 9-0 run of our own. Another 18-4 run gives PAOK a 49-32 lead
PROFILE [3] which is later cut to 53-45 by a 0-9 run by Stefanel. PAOK
brings the lead back up to 13 points but a very bad call by the
refs charging Korfas with an offensive foul rather than giving
him the chance for a 3 point play allows Stefanel to close
PAOK's lead to 6. But at the last seconds Korfas scores a very
long 3 and PAOK beats Stefanel Trieste 75-66 in the first leg of
the Korac Cup finals played in Thessaloniki (Berry 23). The 9
point differential is satisfactory, given that Prelevic played
nursing an injury on a finger, but far from enough for winning
the Cup in Trieste, where Stefanel is expected to be stronger
and shoot better than 2/19 from 3 point land!
16/ 3/94 In Trieste PAOK plays our best game ever! Helped by the fast
BOXSCORE & GAME pace the Italian team imposes trying to close the 9 point gap,
PROFILE [4] PAOK puts together a shooting clinic: 96% from the free-throw
line, 63% for 2 point shots, 82% for 3 point shots! Stefanel
responds with impressive shooting too. Close to the end of the
1st half Stefanel is up by 2 points, tying their biggest lead,
but Boudouris with 4 successive free-throws allows PAOK to
maintain the lead at halftime. The 2nd half starts with 8
different players, 4 for each team, scoring 2 point baskets.
Soon after that Stefanel makes a 2-12 run and at the most
crucial moment they are up 60-66. Both teams miss several
successive tries, including a 3 point shot by Gentile that could
have negated PAOK's 9 point advantage from the first game. But
Korfas scores first, breaking the impass, and Stefanel misses
again. Boudouris brings up the ball slowly but suddenly throws
a long pass to Prelevic who immediately sinks a huge 3-pointer
against the momentarily relaxed Stefanel defense and cuts their
lead to 65-66. The game features later an amazing sequence of
6 3-pointers, 3 for each team. The first one gives Stefanel a 4
point lead but afterwards they never lead by more than 1. PAOK
players shoot well from the line taking advantage of the
desperation fouls committed by Stefanel players and extend the
lead. PAOK triumphs and becomes the first Greek team
ever to win the Korac Cup and the first to boast having won 2
Cups in European competitions (Prelevic 30, Berry 26). All
players had a magnificent game, but Berry, Korfas, Prelevic, and
especially Boudouris deserve particular acknowledgement.
20/ 3/94 But the old story that has PAOK falling from paradise to hell
BOXSCORE [5] continues. In SEF we try to defend against OSFP a 13 point
lead we carry from the first round game. OSFP plays without
Tarlac, and with Fasoulas and Tarpley both nursing injuries.
However PAOK players are tired from the game in Trieste and the
following celebrations, the officials are very lenient with OSFP
players playing tough defense, and Fasoulas puts up an
excellent all-around performance against his old team with 19
points, 12 rebounds, 7 blocks and 89% shooting from the field!
At the 5th minute PAOK is already down by more than 13 points
and never succeeds in cutting the lead to less than 14. PAOK
loses 61-79 and along with that the home-court advantage for the
POs to OSFP (Savic 20, Berry 19).
2/ 4/94 PAOK beats 101-75 Apollon in Patra but Savic gets disqualified
from the game for participating in a fight (Berry 22, Prelevic
22). The Athletic Judge imposes a 4 game suspension on Savic,
who is bound to miss the whole PO series against Aris, one PO
game against PAO, and possibly the semi-final of the Greek Cup
against Iraklis! "Athletic Justice" is really meaningless in
Greece as teams from Athens have time and time again benefited
from lenient decisions. OSFP will be punished only after
several months for their fans misconduct in some game, but in
the case of Savic "justice" is swift and harsh.
10/ 4/94 PAOK leads Aris 41-20 at halftime but has to survive a huge
comeback by Aris in the second half before extending the lead to
the final 67-58 (Prelevic 28).
12/ 4/94 PAOK beats for the second time Aris 65-56 getting invaluable
help from Tsekos (Berry 23, ..., Tsekos 12). Savic will not
play for 2 more games.
25/ 4/94 PAOK plays without Savic against PAO with the strong frontline
of Vrankovic and Volkov. PAOK is down by the ominous 29-37 at
halftime. But in an amazing second half, PAOK defeats PAO 73-64
and opens an 1-0 lead in the series (Berry 21, Prelevic 19).
27/ 4/94 PAOK plays Iraklis in Ivanofio for the semi-final of the Greek
Cup, again without Savic. PAOK leads 31-24 at halftime but
during the second half Berry gets injured and PAOK loses the
game 54-62 (Berry 17, Prelevic 14). Some people claim that PAOK
decided to face OSFP only in the POs, and not in the final of
the Greek Cup that would be played in OSFP's home-court. More
than half a year later, when Ikonomithis is blamed for having
let Berry leave PAOK, he accuses him for demanding from
Markopoulos to substitute Galakteros in this game; and,
according to Ikonomithis, when Markopoulos did not comply,
Berry, frustrated, faked an injury!
11/ 5/94 PAOK and PAO have exchanged wins, all by home teams, and the
BOXSCORE [6] series is tied 2-2. In the final game PAOK beats PAO 66-55 and
advances to the PO final to face OSFP (Prelevic 22).
24/ 5/94 OSFP and PAOK have exchanged wins, again all by home teams, and
BOXSCORE [7] the series is tied 2-2. In the 3rd game, PAOK, despite playing
without Berry who was injured, threatened OSFP with an upset.
So now the 5th and final game is considered open. We are soon
down 12-28 as the officials do not call a lot of fouls, thus
favoring OSFP that plays tough defense. But we adjust to the
way the game is called and respond with tough defense of our
own, taking advantage from the fair way that the refs are
calling the game. With Prelevic playing a masterful offensive
game and Boudouris leading the defense with 5 steals, PAOK ties
the game at 54. But we miss many chances to go ahead and with
less than a minute to go we are down 65-66 but we have the ball.
Savic stands halfway between the 3-point and the midcourt lines
and tries to pass to one of the guards who are cutting under
tough -to say the least as in one instance Sigalas trips
Prelevic- pressure by the OSFP defense. Savic's man is staying
back helping close the lanes, as Savic is not a threat from that
far from the basket. Surprisingly the officials, who until then
had done a pretty good job, call a 5'' violation on Savic. But
the rules are clear: a player must be under pressure himself for
the 5'' count to start. But no OSFP player was guarding Savic!
OSFP receives the invaluable gift and Paspalj has the ball. He
picks up his pivot foot and shoots using glass. It's an obvious
traveling violation but the officials close their eyes!
Paspalj's shot is good and PAOK has only a chance to tie the
game with a 3-pointer. Prelevic tries to work his way around a
pick against the tough defense by Sigalas who steals the ball.
Later Prelevic will say that Sigalas hit his arm. We couldn't
form an independent opinion by watching the video because
Prelevic's body is between the ball and the camera. Sigalas
goes on the fast break for the dunk and Berry fouls him
intentionally from behind with a few seconds to go. OSFP fans
get inside the court while a shower of coins hit PAOK players
who flee to the locker rooms. Ikonomithis decides to keep the
team from returning, not so much for being afraid of the OSFP
fans, as he claims, but rather because of being frustrated for
the blatant way that the officials used to virtually hand over
the game and the championship to OSFP. Later PAOK officials are
warned that PAOK could be disqualified from next season's
European Championship in favor of Panionios if the team would
not return to finish the game, so they send the bench players on
the court to witness Sigalas' free-throws and the passage of the
remaining seconds. PAOK loses the game 65-70, and OSFP is
Champion for the 2nd straight year (Berry 24, Prelevic 23).
Despite losing Fasoulas and never managing to smoothly integrate Galakteros into
the team, PAOK had the good luck of signing two excellent foreign players, Berry
and Savic. The team suffered in the paint, but Savic and Berry put up heroic
efforts against the dominating front courts of OSFP and PAO. Winning the Korac
Cup was one of the biggest successes in team's history, especially given the
triumphant way it was done. A very difficult Greek Championship was claimed by
our team until the last minute, but the officials took away from us a fair
chance to win it. Winning the 90-91 European Cup, the 91-92 Greek Championship,
and the 92-93 3rd place in the European Championship may have been successes
comparable to winning the Korac Cup and our team was evidently more dominant
during the previous two years. But then we had underachieved, while the 93-94
season, arguably the most successful in our team's history, we overachieved!
Unfortunately it was also the end of the first extended golden period in our
team's basketball history. During this period PAOK was the only European team
that participated for 5 straight years in a final-4, so to say, of some
European competition:
1990: Reached semi-finals of European Cup
1991: European Cup !
1992: Reached final of European Cup
1993: Reached semi-final and finished in 3rd place of European Championship
1994: Korac Cup !
