CAPTAIN

COACHES

Dragan Sakota (18-10 season record) replaces Soulis Markopoulos. Dragan Sakota resigns after the loss in Portugal and is replaced by his assistant, Sakis Laios (16-8 season record). Laios' turn comes after the first PO loss to Iraklis in Alexanthrio and he is replaced by Vaggelis Alexanthris (1-2 season record).

PRESIDENT

Apostolos Ikonomithis for the 2nd straight year.

IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS

PAOK signs Lemone Lampley who played very well the previous season for Stefanel Trieste (for example, he was 19/27 from the field in the 2 finals against PAOK). But, as claimed later, Lampley is not fully committed to play basketball this season as he had been planning to dedicate himself to religious studies before his manager approached him with an offer from PAOK. Or, perhaps, he just doesn't fit into the team. PAOK fans are furious with his selection, as they are probably expecting a player as dominating as Berry, and soon force his release. This move proves eventually a bad one as Lampley's successor, Mustaf, is a pretty good offensive player but gets soon seriously injured and PAOK can not replace him in the European Championship. Bullard is a cheap solution for the Greek Championship and Cup. It takes him some time to adjust, and when he does he plays pretty well; but his caliber is not enough to assure PAOK even the 3rd place that leads to next season's European Championship. Meanwhile Stojakovic has been cleared by FIBA to play as Greek, and EOK complies issuing him the necessary documents. But he is still not allowed to play as Greek in Greece. 29/ 9/94 70-82 loss to Hapoel in Tel-Aviv and the danger of elimination from the European Championship is imminent (Boudouris 18). 6/10/94 PAOK struggles to open any substantial lead until the last minutes when the ejection with 5 fouls of key players for Hapoel and inspired plays by Rentzias give PAOK an 82-66 win and keep the dream of a successfull year in the European Championship alive (Galakteros 14). Lampley has become the black sheep for PAOK fans who demanded his substitution with Rentzias until Sakota complied. 9/10/94 PAOK beats Sporting 75-71 in Athens for the Greek Cup and becomes the favorite to win it all as OSFP and PAO are already eliminated (Savic 19). 22/10/94 With Lampley scoring 0 points in limited minutes, PAOK is down 22-43 to PAO at halftime before losing 53-64 (Prelevic 16). 27/10/94 Mustaf plays his first game with PAOK in Tel-Aviv and PAOK wins 84-75 at the stretch (Prelevic 24, Mustaf 19). This will be the only "European" loss for Maccabi in Israel this season! The future looks deceivingly good for PAOK. 2/11/94 After almost 3 years and 22 straight wins in European competitions, PAOK loses 80-81 to CSKA Moskow in Alexanthrio after committing numerous errors and playing very poor defense (Prelevic 21, Mustaf 20). 23/11/94 PAOK beats Benfica with the poor 74-68 and something is obviously wrong (Mustaf 17, Stojakovic 16). 27/11/94 PAOK plays OSFP in Alexanthrio and during the warming-up Mustaf gets seriously injured. PAOK leads at halftime 40-35 but OSFP cruises during the second half to a 65-74 win (Prelevic 27, Savic 20). 30/11/94 A big chance to recover in the European Championship is lost as PAOK loses 81-87 to Olimpia in Liubliana (Prelevic 23, Savic 17, Stojakovic 17). 8/12/94 PAOK loses again to PAO 63-72, this time for the European Championship (Prelevic 20). 14/12/94 New defeat at home, this time 57-73 to Real Madrid (Korfas 15). 17/12/94 Hope for something good in the Greek Championship returns as PAOK beats Panionios 66-63 in Athens, with Rentzias blocking Hristothoulou at the last seconds (Savic 18, Galakteros 15). 4/ 1/95 The new year starts with a hands-down 70-82 loss to Scavolini in Pesaro as Prelevic sits out the game with an injury (Savic 21, Stojakovic 17). 7/ 1/95 PAOK beats Aris 87-79 (Galakteros 22, Korfas 20). 12/ 1/95 PAOK beats Maccabi 79-62 and some hope for advancing to the pre-semi-finals of the European Championship is generated (Savic 21, Stojakovic 17). 15/ 1/95 Bullard plays for the first time for PAOK and puts up some good defensive plays against Berry as PAOK beats Iraklis 67-56 (Galakteros 19). 18/ 1/95 In the do or die game of the season PAOK loses 73-85 to CSKA in Moskow (Savic 23, Galakteros 17). 26/ 1/95 New humiliating 75-77 loss to Benfica in Portugal (Savic 16, Galakteros 16). Sakota resigns after the game and is replaced by Laios who, according to rumors, has been undermining Sakota. 1/ 2/95 PAOK beats 85- 66 Olimpia Liubliana (Prelevic 19, Stojakovic 17). 4/ 2/95 Hope for getting the second place in the regular season all but disappears as PAOK loses 68-77 to PAO in Alexanthrio without Bullard who is injured (Prelevic 17, Galakteros 17). Vrankovic throws back to the fans an object they have thrown on the court, and a small vendetta opens. 8/ 2/95 PAOK beats PAO 80-70, this time for the European Championship, as fans pack Alexanthrio and cheer the team to go for a prestige win (Savic 24, Prelevic 23). Athens press blames PAOK for reducing PAO's chances to win the home-court advantage. 16/ 2/95 PAOK loses easily 52-69 to Real in Madrid (Savic 14). Prelevic is apparently displeased and doesn't play well. It will soon become well known that he, along other players, has not been paid regularly according to his contract. 22/ 2/95 PAOK beats Scavolini 84-79 and assures one of the 2 top spots for PAO (Savic 19, Prelevic 18). Athens press waits until the following day when PAO beats in Spain the indifferent or probably even willing to lose Real to dwell on the latter win! The extent of some sports journalists ignorance or hypocrisy is unbelievable! 1/ 3/95 PAOK loses a big chance to beat OSFP in SEF, as OSFP misses key players. PAOK has a chance to win but Prelevic turns the ball over with the score tied 61-61 and Tomic breaks the tie with less than 2'' to go. PAOK loses 61-63 and now all we can hope for in the regular season is to maintain the home court advantage against Iraklis (Prelevic 22). 4/ 3/95 Just a few days after the disappointing loss to OSFP, PAOK plays BOXSCORE [1] Aris in the semi-final of the Greek Cup. The game is tied at halftime but PAOK, led by Prelevic, opens a big lead at the beginning of the second half and cruises to a relaxing 80-63 win (Prelevic 29). 5/ 3/95 One day later Panionios does not pose any serious threat to BOXSCORE [2] PAOK. Prelevic is not alone this time as Savic plays well and PAOK wins 72-53 (Prelevic 27, Savic 21). In a disappointing year circumstances have led the team to the 4th Greek title in team's history, and only 2nd Cup after the well renowned 1984 final when PAOK players cut their hair short as a sign of unity and determination before beating Aris 74-70. 17/ 4/95 Having survived many close games during the regular season and maintained the home-court advantage against Iraklis, PAOK faces another big obstacle in the way to next year's European Championship: Aris puts up a good fight, and PAOK wins but with difficulty 84-82 (Prelevic 32). 19/ 4/95 With Prelevic's financial problems overshadowing the game, PAOK leads Aris 43-35 at halftime. But at the second half bad officiating and White's good game force PAOK to a 73-84 loss (Savic 21). PAOK fans are furious and their acts lead to a 2 game suspension of our home-court, later reduced to 1 game. 25/ 4/95 PAOK defeats Aris 76-69 and advances to the semi-finals (Prelevic 23, Bullard 19). Unsubstantiated rumors in Thessaloniki have White been bribed by PAOK! 28/ 4/95 PAOK gets crushed 69-92 by PAO (Savic 21). 30/ 4/95 In another prestige effort, as the first semi-final showed that we can't beat PAO in Athens, PAOK goes to OT before losing again to PAO 75-77 (Prelevic 32). 5/ 5/95 PAOK loses to Iraklis in Alexanthrio 77-86 and the home-court advantage is also lost (Prelevic 21, Bullard 20). Laios is replaced by Alexanthris. 7/ 5/95 PAOK beats 76-67 Iraklis in Ivanofio and hope returns (Prelevic 23). 9/ 5/95 In a finale reminiscent of the previous season loss in Peristeri, PAOK blows in the last seconds a big lead and loses 75-76 to Iraklis, after Asteriathis, an ex-PAOK player, and Holopoulos hit successive 3-pointers (Prelevic 22). 11/ 5/95 PAOK seems to have overcome the devastating loss and leads Iraklis 40-34 at halftime. But at the second half PAOK does not play well and the game goes to OT. Iraklis' players hit some crucial shots and never look back. PAOK loses 81-90 and with this the chance to play in next season's European Championship (Prelevic 27, Korfas 18). Only Prelevic and Korfas -in his last game with PAOK, at least for a while- have given a big effort. Berry celebrates and dedicates the win to Ikonomithis for accusing him of interfering with Markopoulos' decisions during last season's Greek Cup semi-final against Iraklis. Ikonomithis, claiming big financial problems, made some bad decisions in the selection of Berry's replacement. Most players were not paid on time, and all this destroyed the chemistry of the team. Galakteros was dissatisfied with the loss of playing time to Stojakovic in European games but still had a much better year than his first one. But it was the loss of Mustaf to injury that was the crucial blow to this year's efforts. Nevertheless, chances are that even if this had not happened, PAOK would not have done anything spectacular, but probably we could have won the 3rd place leading to next years's European Championship. Besides winning the Greek Cup, the only other good outcome from this year was the promising game and longer playing time of Rentzias and Yannoulis, although many people argued they should have played even more. At the end of the season financial problems led Ikonomithis to release Korfas -who didn't have a good year, probably affected by the death of his father the previous summer and by the team's financial problems- to PAO and Galakteros to OSFP. Korfas complained that he deserved better treatment from PAOK after all these years, and he was definitely right. Players like Korfas should never be released from a team at this stage of their career, unless it's their own wish. Galakteros was a very good player, but he never managed to fit well in the team. Therefore, given the financial problems and the expected clearance of Stojakovic to play as Greek in Greece during the summer, this trade seemed a reasonable move, the problem being that it strengthened even more one of our big competitors, OSFP. The end of the trade season found PAOK in a transition state, hoping to get in the future bigger contributions from the team's young national team level talent of Rentzias, Yannoulis, and Stojakovic, as well as from the good foreign players that would be presumably acquired with the money saved by trading Korfas and Galakteros.
