Stojakovic will play as Greek not only in Europe, as the year before, but in
Greece as well. Savic and Bullard are replaced by Garret and Ruffin. The
latter is replaced by Funderburke who will not play in the European Cup.
Galakteros and Korfas are released. Nikolaithis is acquired and Koptis
is promoted from the junior team.
CAPTAIN
Bane Prelevic in his 8th year with PAOK.
COACH
Vaggelis Alexanthris (3-1 season record) offers his resignation after our
elimination in the first round of the Greek Cup. During the summer there were
rumors about Ivkovic returning to PAOK but he is bound by a contract with
Panionios. PAOK officials turn to Efthimis Kioumourtzoglou and soon they
agree on an 1-year contract, to be extended for another year if the team
finishes in the top-3. At the same time it is regarded by many with certainty
that Ivkovic will be the coach for the next year... Despite this uncertainty,
coach K starts in an extremely positive note, as he coaches PAOK for the first
time in SEF against OSFP and PAOK wins the game after 7 straight losses to OSFP
in this court. But he doesn't last long. After the game in Ivanofio he subits
his resignation, but it is not accepted. Very soon, before the game against
Panionios, he submits his resignation again claiming that the players do not
behave in a professional way and that the team's administration is not
supporting his efforts to bring some discipline to the team. Thimitris Ittouthis
acts as an interim coach in expectation of Zeliko Lukaic who coaches PAOK for the
first time in OAKA against PAO. Lukaic leads the team to a 10-win streak and to
the final of the European Cup, but he is fired after a series of dissapointing
results and Thimitris Ittouthis becomes head coach again.
PRESIDENT
Lakis Ikonomithis gets ousted in July by a group of ex-PAOK officials (Katsaris,
Panelouthis, Alexopoulos, Ikonomithis). In early August Lakis Alexopoulos is
elected President. The new governing group settles debts to PAOK players but
still struggles with the enormous debt that exceeds $15 million!
IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS
13/ 8/95 PAOK signs Trevor Ruffin of the Phoenix Suns. He is portrayed
Trevor
Ruffin
as an off-guard, which is not very strange since PAOK is looking
for a point-guard that can score. Whether Ruffin can play
effectively this role remains to be seen...
30/ 8/95 In a pre-season game in Larisa, Stojakovic breaks his fibula
(Greek: peroni). The diagnosis is that no muscles or ligaments
are damaged, so the player is expected to be back in about 3
months.
1/ 9/95 PAOK signs Dean Garret who played the last 2 seasons with
Scavolini Pesaro. He is 2.08 m tall and in the 94-95 season he
averaged about 19 ppg in the Italian League and 11 ppg in the
European Championship. Some claim that he was signed in haste
due to FIBA's deadline which this year was quite early for PAOK
because the team would participate in the preliminary round of
the European Cup facing a Cypriot team from Kyreneia.
PAOK fans are sceptical concerning the quality of the foreign
players that have been acquired, as well as the reasons for
which the new officials did not make their move against
ex-president Lakis Ikonomithis before he traded Galakteros and
Korfas. Probably they didn't want to start their administration
by making unpopular yet financially unavoidable moves, so they
let Ikonomithis make them! According to some rumors they made
their move when they learned that Ikonomithis was trying to
sell-off Rentzias, who had recently been declared MVP of the
1995 World Championship for Juniors.
9/ 9/95 PAOK beats PAEE Kirinia 109-40 in Cyprus (Rentzias 18, Yannoulis
18).
12/ 9/95 PAOK beats PAEE Kirinia 116-47 (Ruffin 23).
20/ 9/95 Rumors predict the replacement of coach Alexanthris, who gets
the blame for the apparent mismatch of Ruffin with the
play-maker needs of the team, by Efthimis Kioumourtzoglou. As
usual, people do not allow any time for adjustment. Ruffin, who
was a shooting-guard in the NBA, is expected to change his
position and his style of game automatically?
23/ 9/95 PAOK loses to AEK 75-88 after a disappointing game in the
first round of the Greek Cup (Prelevic 24). Alexanthris offers
his resignation and his replacement seems only a matter of time.
26/ 9/95 PAOK beats 79-71 Postoina in Slovenia with Alexanthris still
on the bench (Ruffin 21). But upon the teams's return, his
expected replacement by Kioumourtzoglou is announced.
30/ 9/95 With coach K for the first time on the bench, PAOK puts together
a very good performance and beats OSFP 77-76 in SEF, for the
first time since the 1993 European final-4 (Prelevic 31)! PAOK
never lost the lead, and with 30'' to go we were up by 9, but 3
3-pointers by OSFP reduced the differential which could become
important should PAOK loses to OSFP in the second round. PAOK
played without the injured Stojakovic and Mamatziolas, but OSFP
missed also the defense of Sigalas, who served his 1-game
suspension due to a fight with Alvertis in last year's PO's.
Another excuse for OSFP is that, unlike PAOK, the team did not
have the opportunity to play before this game any officials
games in Europe or for the Greek Cup to integrate better the new
foreign players (Berry and Rivers) into the team.
3/10/95 PAOK beats Postoina 110-66 (Prelevic 26, Rentzias 18).
7/10/95 FIBA is not setting the pairs this time and the draw forces PAOK
to a difficult match-up against with the Ukraine Champion
Budivelnik, with the second game in Kiev.
14/10/95 PAOK beats Larisa 80-68 (Ruffin 24, Prelevic 22).
21/10/95 A few days before the crucial game against Budivelnik, PAOK
loses in Athens to Ampelokipi 85-87 (Prelevic 30, Ruffin 29).
This is a very disappointing result, given the success the team
had under the coaching of coach K up to this point. PAOK has
justified complaints for some very bad calls by the refs,
including at least two cases of goal-tending, but this does not
diminish the bitterness of such a loss.
24/10/95 Despite the excellent and very promising performance of the
"rookie" Nikolaithis, PAOK misses the chance to expand the 14
point half lead and beats Budivelnik with the poor score 76-68
and the second game in Kiev appears very dangerous (Nikolaithis
16, Prelevic 16). Ruffin doesn't play a good game, perhaps
influenced by rumors he will be replaced after the second game
in Kiev because he can not play effectively as a point-guard.
28/10/95 PAOK beats with difficulty Iraklio 85-80 (Prelevic 24).
31/10/95 After being down by 8 points 3 times in the second half, PAOK
loses to Budivelnik 74-75 in Kiev but advances to the
groups (Ruffin 27).
6/11/95 Due to a power failure, allegedly caused by strong rainfall in
Athens, the game against AEK is postponed from Saturday to
Monday, contrary to the rules that require games to be played
within 1 day. AEK plays without the newly arrived Campbell
who is to replace Pelle who was injured in an elevator, but puts
together a shooting display against PAOK who has the misfortune
to see Prelevic leaving the game injured in the first half. At
halftime PAOK is down by 20 points and despite strong efforts
during the second half PAOK loses for a second time this year to
AEK in Athens, thsi time 83-92 (Garret 21). This game
appears to be a turning point for the team which still expects
some improvement from teh erturn of the injured Stojakovic, but
has done little to resolve the big deffensive and point-guard
problems, which Stojakovic is not expected to solve.
10/11/95 Kioumourtzoglou replaces Trevor Ruffin with Lawrence
Funderburke as the first did not satisfy the coach with his game
at the point-guard position. Funderburke, though, will not be
able to play in the European Cup because he played with Hapoel
Eilat earlier this year in the Korac Cup. But this obvious
drawback was regarded by PAOK officials also as a means to
diffuse the opposition of the young promising center Rentzias
who saw in this move a threat to his playing time.
13/11/95 Prelevic returns to training sessions, after his injury in the
game against AEK.
18/11/95 Almost 3 months after his serious injury in Larisa, Stojakovic
returns to action but PAOK loses to Iraklis 79-87 despite the
very good performance by the two practically new players
(Funderburke 25, Stojakovic 24). Prelevic has a bad day,
scoring only 8 points in the 1st half and 0 in the 2nd. The
reason is ambiguous, as other people speak of an injury he is
nursing and others of problems in his relations with the coach.
Immediately after the game coach Kioumourtzoglou announces his
intent to resign after the upcoming game against Zrinjevac.
21/11/95 PAOK beats Zrinjevac in OT 86-85 (Prelevic 29, Garret 26).
Kioumourtzoglou agrees to remain the coach but rumors have his
relations with several players being not so good.
25/11/96 PAOK beats Apollon 74-66 (Prelevic 24, Stojakovic 17).
28/11/95 PAOK beats Olimpia 77-67 (Prelevic 24, Garret 19). The
game
was tied until about 3 minutes before the end when PAOK with
good defnse went onto a 12-0 run.
2/12/95 PAOK loses agin in Athens, this time 83-85 to Sporting
(Prelevic 22, Funderburke 19, Boudouris 18).
5/12/95 Despite our bad game, we manage to beat 75-71 with great
difficulty the rather weak Kalev in Tallinn (Stojakovic 20).
9/12/95 Kioumourtzoglou submits his resignation once again claiming that
the palyers are undisciplined and that the administration is not
supporting his efforts to solve this problem. Soon after PAOK
beats Panionios 77-70 (Prelevic 24, Stojakovic 19). Ivkovic
is cheered by PAOK fans both before and after the game.
12/12/95 PAOK is leading in most of the game in Moscow, but the last 3
minutes Dynamo Moscow goes to a 10-1 run to win 62-65 (Prelevic
16, Stojakovic 12). A big chance for PAOK to have the advantage
for the 1st position in the group is lost. Now Dynamo, that has
won in Liubliana, has the upper hand.
17/12//95 Prelevic has a high fever, our free-throw shooting is horrible,
but despite all that we have a good chance to beat PAO in OAKA
before we finally succumb 54-61 (Garret 17, Funderburke 15).
It is obvious now that the playing style of the team has changed
to a more slow pace, perhaps after the bad results that we had
with a faster pace. Whether Ivkovic is behind this change
remails to be seen.
19/12/95 PAOK beats easily Nobiles 109-66 (Stojakovic 31, Rentzias 18).
23/12/95 Another very good effort by PAOK players in the second half
leads to a comfortable 98-67 win over Peristeri (Stojakovic 25,
Nikolaithis 17, Prelevic 17).
27/12/95 PAOK loses yet another close game, this time to Aris 64-65 and
closes the year in a disappointing note (Funderburke 22).
30/12/95 PAOK beats Papagou 90-72 (Prelevic 20, Stojakovic 20).
2/ 1/96 The Croats score a 3 in the last seconds, like they did in both
the regulation and the OT in the first game, and PAOK loses yet
another close game in the last seconds, this time 73-76 to
Zrinjevac (Prelevic 22). This loss could prove very important
later, as Zrinjevac now wins the tie-break against PAOK. After
the game Garret is fined because, reportedly, he arrived at the
airport late, without his passport, and being drunk. He later
denies accusations that he and Funderburke are regular visitors
at nude-dancing night clubs. But in general there are rumors
that several PAOK players have lifestyles not that consistent
with their line of work.
9/ 1/96 PAOK beats easily 86-66 Olimpia in Liubliana (Prelevic 26,
Stojakovic 22). However, the extent and importance of this win
are overshadowed by intense rumors that the outcome of the game
was prearranged, at a time that Greek basketball suffers from
other rumors related to game fixing, after the content of a
ape, supposedly with the voice of Steve Yatzoglou admitting
bribing referies while he coached OSFP several years ago, is
made public, "coincidentally" just after Yatzoglou became the
new coach of Iraklis...
11/ 1/96 Bane Prelevic sprains his ancle quite seriously during practice
and his playing against OSFP in 3 days is questionable.
14/ 1/96 Prelevic fianlly plays against OSFP but Boudouris doesn't. With
a push from the refs OSFP opens 1 17 point lead at some point in
the first half. The heroics of Prelevic bring PAOK back into
the game and with aabout 5' to go we gain a 55-53 lead. But at
the end Prelevic is tired and guarded very closely by Sigalas,
with the refs' tolerance, and young Nikolaidis makes some
critical errors. OSFP end the game with a 3-14 run, and wins
the game 58-67 (Prelevic 24, Garret 12).
16/ 1/96 Prelevic turns his game around in the second half, the refs help
us quite a bit and PAOK beats Kalev Tallinn 77-63 (Prelevic 19,
Stojakovic 18).
20/ 1/96 At last, a win on the road for PAOK! Despite being down by 8
a few minutes before the end, PAOK players put together a mini
come-back and make key free-throws to pull a difficult 74-72 win
in Larisa (Funderburke 21, Prelevic 20).
23/ 1/96 Another come-back from PAOK, this time big and in a very crucial
game! Dynamo leads 41-51 when PAOK goes on a 16-0 run, mostly
without Prelevic who takes a breath on the bench! At the final
minutes both teams send the opponents to the free-throw line,
PAOK to avoid a 3-pointer and Dynamo to stop the clock. PAOK
players make the key free-throws and Bazarevic misses on a
3-pointer at the end. PAOK wins 64-59 and now has the
advantage in a probable tie, as Dynamo has won in Moscow only by
3 (Prelevic 21, Stojakovic 20)! Alexanthrio relives glorious
moments! At the same time Zrinjevac' loss at Tallinn guarantee
PAOK's advancing to the final 4 of the European Cup. It's the
5th time in the last 6 years that PAOK advances to a European
competition semi-final! Now PAOK needs to beat Nobiles in
Poland to secure the top spot in the group, and along with that
the home-court advantage in teh semi-final.
27/ 1/96 PAOK beats Ampelokipi 105-58 (Stojakovic 24, Funderburke 22).
29/ 1/96 Dynamo Moscow loses at home to Kalev Tallinn and PAOK finishes
1st in the group, which gives us the home court advantage for
the semi-finals.
30/ 1/96 PAOK triumphs in Poland beating Nobiles 112-57 Stojakovic 37).
However, strange results in the other group bring Taugres at the
top spot. Now the Spanish team can win the European Cup just by
not losing at home. PAOK will face another eastern European
team: Zalgiris Kaunas, which started with 7 wins and finished
with 3 losses, barely making it to the same finals.
3/ 2/96 PAOK wins easily in Iraklio 85-67 after leading by 27 at
halftime (Stojakovic 25, Funderburke 19). 3 days before the
first European Cup semi-final, things look bright for PAOK!
6/ 2/96 Despite being down 12-26 ans 33-41 at halftime, PAOK triumphs
at Kaunas beating Zalgiris 83-76 (Prelevic 34, Garret 16,
Stojakovic 15)!
10/ 2/96 Prelevic is suffering from an inflamation close to a disk of his
spinal cord and lies in the hospital while PAOK plays AEK at
Larisa due to a ban of our home-court as a result of fan
behavior during the game against OSFP. PAOK has a very good
start in the game, and despite the unfavorable circumstances and
a big come-back by AEK, wins the game 86-81 (Funderburke 26,
Stojakovic 25, Boudouris 15). Everybody is now cautious, as the
possibility of Prelevic's absence from the upcoming game against
Zalgiris has PAOK fans question our advancing to the final,
which seemed certain some days ago.
13/ 2/96 Zalgiris does not resist PAOK but for some minutes before they
surrender. PAOK fans and players have a very nice evening as
PAOK crushes Zalgiris 104-59 (Garret 21, Stojakovic 21, Rentzias
18)!
17/ 2/96 PAOK covers the point differential that Iraklis has since the
first round game, but Iraklis comes back to make it a 2 point
game. However PAOK recovers and gets a 68-58 win,
which wins
the tie-break against Iraklis (Funderburke 21, Stojakovic 15).
24/ 2/96 After a disappointing game, PAOK loses in Patra to Apollon 70-88
(Garret 16, Stojakovic 14). Perhaps the team was used to
playing twice a week and not doing so affected its rythm.
Perhaps it was a very bad day. Perhaps it was a shock that
reminded us of the real capabilities of the team.
2/ 3/96 PAOK beats easily Sporting 89-67 despite the absence of Prelevic
who takes a rest, and the limited playing time of Funderburke,
who also nurses an injuty, in favor of practicing schemes for
the European Cup final (Stojakovic 30, Mamatziolas 13). Costner
also did not play for Sporting, which was, certainly, a big
factor in PAOK's easy win. Mamatziolas contributions in limited
playing time looks very promising. Now PAOK has 10 whole days
to prepare for the final, which this time is to be played under
very unfavorable conditions: on our opponnets' court!
12/ 3/96 PAOK plays very well in the first half, but Rivas keeps Taugres
in the game. PAOK opens a 12 point lead which is cut to 6 at
halftime. Taugres ties the game early in the second half but
PAOK opens again a 10 point lead. Komas takes a time-out and
Taugres' counter-attack begins. PAOK's young players do not
have the experience to withstand this attack playing virtually
at the home of their opponents. Garret, with foul problems,
never gets in the rythm of the game which he finishes scorelss.
Prelevic takes all the responsibilities in offense and scores
17 straight points for PAOK. But Taugres scores 30 at the same
period of time and opens an 8 point lead. PAOK loses 81-88
after a pretty good game, especially in the first half, that we
could have won had we guarded Rivas (31 points) better (Prelevic
34, Stojakovic 20). Another European final is lost, and this
time the easy excuses are that our only (officially) foreign
player, Garret, did not perform up to par, and that the refs
helped the home team, Taugres, especially by being very lenient
on Rivas. The team now tries to concentrate on the very crucial
upcoming game against Panionios, which is likely to decide the
3rd spot for the regular season. The bad performance against
OSFP after the Trieste final 2 years ago which cost us the
home-court advantage in the POs has made a pretty bad precedent.
16/ 3/96 A dismal week concludes with a big loss to Panionios 65-75
(Prelevic 16). By not protecting the 7 point differential that
we carried from the first round game, we narrowed significantly
our chances to capture the 3rd spot in the regular season as
Panionios in now up a win and also wins the tie-break. Now PAOK
need Panionios to lose at least 2 games, and PAOK either to lose
none, or lose one, beat Aris by 10 or more, and have a 3-way tie
invo,ving us, Panionios, and Aris.
20/ 3/96 The downhill continues. Despite PAO's apparent indifference
(Maljkovic didn't even use Korfas who asked not to play against
his old team!) PAOK loses 68-69 (Funderburke 17, Garret 14).
Boudouris had a chance to win the game but he missed both
free-throws with 3'' to go! Just before the game Panionios had
won in Ivanofio and all but clinched the 3rd position. Now PAOK
has to fight to assure the 4th or 5th position, that will result
in a traditional play-off match-up against Aris.
26/ 3/96 PAOK wins in Peristeri 59-58 after a bad game by both teams
(Stojakovic 19, Funderburke 15). However this win may boost our
young team's self-confidence, so necessary for the coming
play-off games. Now PAOK has control over winning the 4th place
in the regular season, which, nonetheless, would still be the
worst finish for the team in the last 10 years!
31/ 3/96 In a training session a couple of days before the game, Ellis
broke Aggelidis' jaw. PAOK was considered before the game to be
the favorite to win, despite the recent slump. Up by 10 at the
beginning of the 2nd half, PAOK underwent another transformation
and lost to the young Aris team 74-86 (Stojakovic 21, Prelevic
18, Funderburke 17). Although the big differential is deceptive
as it was developed in the last minute, PAOK had yet another
very disappointing performance and saddened the supporters of
the team who expected a win against their traditional rivals.
The fact that this game was likely not to have any significant
importance for the POs was certainly not a consolation for them.
3/ 4/96 PAOK keeps Boudouris and Garret out of the team for different
reasons ad PAOK loses to Papagou 79-85 in a game that could
cost us the 5th position had Sporting pulled the upset against PAO
(Prelevic 20). Garret leaves after the game for the US, accusing
PAOK that they had fixed the game. Iraklio, that was harmed by
our loss, it quick to take the accusations seriously. But Garret
should probably pay more attention to his personal habits that
cost PAOK a lot. Lukaic is fired after the game, and Ittouthis
becomes again the head coach.
6/ 4/96 PAOK beats Larisa 95-71 (Stojakovic 25, Prelevic 20).
8/ 4/96 PAOK beats Larisa again, thsi time at Larisa, 77-75, advances to
the final-8 of the Greek Championship and assures our
participation in the 96-97 Korac Cup (Prelevic 19).
17/ 4/96 Prelevic leads PAOK to an unexpectedly huge 102-70 win over Aris
(Prelevic 29, Stojakovic 27, Funderburke 22). What remains to be
seen is whether this win is just one more expression of the teams's
potential for excellence amidst of inconsistent, not to say bad,
performances. Rumors have that Prelevic already signed a big
4-year contract. And another scenario is that PAOK players decided
to do as the Houston Rockets did the year before :-)
19/ 4/96 PAOK wins again easily 99-88 with Prelevic playing another
superb game and advances to the Final-4 (Prelevic 34).
25/ 4/96 PAOK suffers a 72-84 loss as OSFP opens quicly a large lead
(Funderburke 25, Prelevic 13). The over-enthusiasm after the
easy wins against Aris is followed by sceptiscsim, although
there is always hope.
28/ 4/96 PAOK plays pretty well and beats OSFP 81-76 (Prelevic 29,
Funderburke 22). But OSFP was likely counting on the 3rd leg
to be played in SEF in a few days.
1/ 5/96 This time PAOK stays longer in the game as we are down just by
6 at halftime. But soon OSFP opens a large lead that exceeds 20
points, before PAOK, like in the first game in SEF, cuts down
the difference to the final 70-80 (Funderburke 22, Stojakovic
20). Now PAOK will play for the 3rd position and the right to
play for the 96-97 European League against Panionios, again with
home-court disadvantage. Panionios was eliminated for the
championship contention one day earlier, by losing on the road
to PAO 62-68, despite leading 40-28 at halftime.
4/ 5/96 PAOK is leading Panionios, that plays without Karagoutis who
seriously injured his foot, with up to more than 10 points and
until less than 5 minutes in regulation are left, when a barage
of 3-pointers by Dinkins and Bosganas, but mainly the inability
of tired PAOK players to respond to pressure in the last crucial
minutes of a game, result in another disappointing 72-84 loss
to Panionios (Stojakovic 22, Funderburke 19). There is still
hope left, though, especially as Karagoutis' absence is expected
to adversely affect Panionios' game to a significant extent.
7/ 5/96 The same routine, PAOK is leading by 12 in the seconf half
only to see Panionios steal a 77-80 victory that all but
eliminates our hopes to win the series (Stojakovic 26).
11/ 5/96 The season ends for PAOK with a very disappointing performance
as Panionios opens the game with a 25-7 run and later extends
the lead up to 27 points and wins easily 72-88 (Prelevic 18).
Prelevic threatens that he will leave PAOK because of
organizational problems that do not allow the realization of
any high goals. The same reasons supposedly keep Ivkovic from
leaving Panionios and rejoining our team.
