(EBM) research group,
headed by Professor Timothy Gutowski, is part of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity and the
Mechanical
Engineering Department at the
Massachusetts Institute
of Technology
The EBM group is focused on examining the environmental effects
associated with manufacturing and products. Research areas include: the
thermodynamic, economic, and life cycle assessment of manufacturing
processes and systems, products and recycling systems. Additional work
looks at the environmental effects from the consumption side of
the issue.

Material Recovery
We investigate material recovery from municipal solid waste and materially-complex products. We look at how to optimize the material recovery chain from system engineering and environmental perspectives.
Can a university become carbon neutral?
Prof. Gutowski and his students from his class 2.83/2.813 (Energy, materials, manufacturing) address this question, published in a recent issue of the MIT Faculty Newsletter.
