Officer Elections 2007 (April) - General Information

The elections for EECS GSA officers for 2007-2008 will take place:

Monday, April 9, 2007

5:30pm, 34-401
Dinner will be provided

The details of the election protocol can be found in Articles III and IV of the By-Laws of the EECS GSA. However, the Proposed Seventh Amendment to the Constitution and By-Laws, which will be voted upon shortly before the election, will affect the offices available.

Due to the passage of the Sixth Amendment, the term of office for the Officers elected this time will be unusually short: May 1, 2007 to January 15, 2008. The next set of elections will take place in October or November of 2007.

Due to the passage of the Fifth Amendment, the new Board of Advisors will be elected immediately after the Officers have been elected at the same meeting.

All graduate students in EECS (including MEng), people admitted to EECS graduate programs, and their alumni and alumnae are encouraged to participate in the election, both as candidates and as voters.

All e-mail addresses here are @mit.edu.

Nominations

Eligibility

All graduate students in EECS (including MEng), people admitted to EECS graduate programs, and their alumni and alumnae are eligible to run for any GSA Officer position, except as specified in Sections IV-1 and IV-3 of the Constitution of the EECS GSA.

Nomination Procedure

  • Nominations will be accepted beginning Monday, March 19, 2007.
  • Candidates must secure a nomination in order to participate in an election for an Officer position. A nomination consists of written messages (e-mail included) to the Executive Committee (eecs-gsa-exec) signed by at least two EECS graduate students, people admitted to EECS graduate programs, or their alumni and alumnae, where all such signatures do not include the nominee.
  • Candidates must formally accept a nomination, either orally at a General Body Meeting or in writing, in order to verify their desire to run for an Officer position. As soon as possible after a candidate accepts his or her nomination, the Secretary shall be responsible for providing all relevant information about the candidate on the Website.
  • Nominations for all Officer positions shall close 24 hours prior to the elections unless fewer than three nominations have been accepted for an Officer position by that time, in which case nominations for that position shall remain open until the election. At this point, a nomination shall consist of a motion by any Member, including the nominee himself or herself, which is seconded by another Member. Such nominations shall require the consent of the nominee to be considered valid.

Proxy Campaigns

Nominees who cannot be present at the election shall, by a written statement sent to the Officers (eecs-gsa-officers), appoint someone to act on their behalf at the election.

Voting Procedure

Eligibility

All graduate students in EECS (including MEng), people admitted to EECS graduate programs, and their alumni and alumnae are eligible to vote in the election.

Ballot Counting Method

The EECS GSA uses the instant runoff voting system, a form of preferential voting, for the election of each office. For the exact algorithm, please refer to Article III of the By-Laws of the EECS GSA

Absentee Voting

Members who cannot be present at the election and want to vote shall, by a written statement sent to the Officers (eecs-gsa-officers), either appoint someone to vote on their behalf at the election or state their voting preferences.

Order of Offices

Elections shall proceed in the following order: Co-Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Treasurer. The order within the Vice Presidents will be determined by the presiding officer of the election after consulting with the candidates. Any unsuccessful candidate may run for one of the remaining positions without any further nomination procedure. In the event that no one is nominated for a position, the position shall remain vacant.
