Global Warming can be used as a teaching tool for general science, biology, ecology, chemistry, political science and economics classes. Many elementary and advanced educational concepts can be addressed through the topic of Global Warming and because of this, it is a wonderful case study for all ages. The topic is regularly addressed by popular media and is one that many students are aware of. The information presented in this site can be used to supplement what can be learned from the media and be incorporated into lesson plans regarding Global Warming.
One of the purposes of this website is to provide some general background and introduce scientific concepts related to Global Warming, in particular the proposed abatement of global warming through Iron Fertilization. According to the “Iron Hypothesis,” fertilizing the ocean with iron would stimulate phytoplankton growth and thus enhance the ocean's carbon dioxide assimilation capacity. This in turn would decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and abate Global Warming. However, there are many concerns involved with the concept of Global Warming. In this site we have attempted to address all perspectives of the issue in order to present an objective view of Iron Fertilization.
This section of EFFECTS is designed to
be used as a teaching tool to supplement other teacher materials and activities
on global warming. It is hoped that this site will encourage Internet technology
use in the classroom and for individual research. To that end we have included
study questions, additional Internet resources, a discussion board and
a glossary to encourage the learning process. Words in red
text can be found in the glossary by clicking on the word. Follow
the links to the left to navigate this site – including, the glossary,
search, links, discussion board and review quiz. Additional study questions
can be found at the end of each section.
