2.1.3 Rehearsing Oral Presentations

Practice initially by drafting your overheads. Establish an intuitive flow for the overheads.

Begin talking through the overheads and take notes on what you want to say about each overhead. Jot your cues on the hardcopy of the overhead NOT on index cards (it's hard to juggle cards, pointers, and overhead acetates during a presentation--keep your hands free)

Rehearse at least five times before a presentation to establish timing and transitions.

Checkout the space you will be speaking in: the physical characteristics of a hall can defeat even the best of speakers sometimes. Determine what aspects of the space may interfere with your presentation and plan accordingly.

Equipment:

Expect technical difficulties with any piece of equipment, especially computer media. Prepare backup material if equipment fails (handouts, for example).
