From the Director

Office of Geothermal Technologies, U.S. Department of Energy

We're back! After a hiatus, the NADET News has returned, this time published under the auspices of the NADET Institute. Quite a few things have happened since the last issue of the News reached you, and the current issue brings you up to date. Among the items we are most proud of include new opportunities for funding of projects in advanced drilling under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and a major solicitation for research proposals issued and research projects initiated by the Institute. Furthermore, five offices within the Department of Energy have now agreed to coordinate their advanced drilling research under NADET.

These positive steps move NADET forward as the collaborative focal point for drilling and excavation research programs. But despite the measurable progress achieved over the past months, significant hurdles remain. In order to succeed, NADET must have sponsors from organizations representing the full gamut of drilling and excavation industries. In today's competitive budget environment, one or two sponsors cannot muster the resources needed to reach NADET's goal of bringing a revolutionary and cheaper means of creating underground space into the marketplace within eight years. We need the help of those organizations with the foresight, commitment and resources that can advance the Program at a pace commensurate with its ambitious goal. If you represent such an organization, I ask that you join NADET today as an active participant. We need your involvement. For more information about how you can help, contact:
