The NADET Institute unveiled its membership plan in January, 1997. To date, NADET has depended on government funding and will continue seeking government support, but direct corporate participation is essential, both to define and carry out appropriate work and to assure commercial success and public benefit. The Institute therefore urges corporations that depend on drilling and excavation operations or that are developing advanced technologies for such operations to become dues-paying members of the Institute. Membership benefits are highlighted in the accompanying box. Member Benefits:

• a role in defining goals and guiding NADET-sponsored R&D programs;
• for sponsors of R&D, assistance in locating and selecting firms or institutions to carry out sponsored programs;
• for R&D firms, inclusion on the NADET list of bidders and information on potential opportunities;
• half of a member’s dues will be credited to projects sponsored by the member;
• participation in NADET Institute annual meetings, sponsors’ conferences, and various workshops and symposia.
• receive all NADET Institute preprints, publications, newsletters, and reports;
• convenient access to the Nevada Testing Institute facility for drilling, excavation, and explosives research, and information on NeTI testing plans and schedules;
• identification of and coordination with relevant programs outside those directly funded by NADET;
• assistance in locating, organizing, or expanding consortia for desired programs;
• assistance in identifying relevant new technologies and suppliers and in arranging visits among member organizations.

Dues are intended to cover the costs of running the program, to provide member services, and to encourage active participation by each member.

Universities are also invited to become NADET Institute Members. In recognition of the limited budgets available to most academic programs in this field, however, an Associate position is offered for universities at a minimal cost to help cover expenses. Associates will enjoy most of the Member benefits and, in lieu of dues, will be expected to participate actively in Institute surveys and information gathering programs.
