Mens et Manus

MIT’s motto "mens et manus" (mind and hand) is embodied in the Energy Studies Minor. The Minor itself begins with hands-on engagements in labs and in the field to immerse students in the reality of the energy system and the challenges of changing energy use. A student’s education at MIT includes and extends far beyond the classroom. Students engage in research and field projects in energy throughout their years at MIT, through MIT’s path-breaking Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). They also form a vibrant student community with strong leadership by the MIT student Energy Club that sponsors the widely acclaimed MIT Energy Conference and annual Energy Showcase; brings speakers from research labs, industry (including established firms and start-ups), government, and civil society throughout the academic year; displays internship and career opportunities; and more. Students also drive a variety of action projects including the Electric Vehicle Team and Solar Electric Vehicle Team, Biodiesel@MIT, Dorm Electricity Competition, and Engineers Without Borders, and participate in international, national and campus-wide contests and challenges including the MIT Clean Energy Prize, IDEAS Competition, Global Challenge, 100K Entrepreneurship Competition, Global Development Marketplace Competition, and more.
