E-CUE AY 2004-05 Theme: Engineering Core and the GIRs

In AY 2004-05, E-CUE has chosen to prepare material for presentation to the MIT Presidential Task Force on the MIT Undergraduate Educational Commons. The issues to be considered include:

  1. enhance core engineering knowledge and abilities important for all MIT undergraduates through development of core freshman curricula.
  2. how might the intellectual connections between engineering study and general education subjects in math, science, and humanities and social science be energized for the benefit of undergraduate education overall and within the School of Engineering.

The results of the E-CUE study are a statement of concepts and educational goals for an engineering GIR (see Part I). E-CUE also outlined a curriculum framework and active learning pedagogy for delivering content to freshmen (see Part II)

In AY 2005-06, the SoE provided funding for development of a pilot subject that introduces engineering, in a project-based learning format, and that incorporate E-CUE themes. The subject, 2.00A (16.00AJ) FUNdaMENTALS of Engineering: Explore Earth, Sea, and Space, taught in Spring 2007, is a hands-on design subject that exposes freshmen to engineering reasoning, problem solving, systems thinking, teamwork and leadership development by focusing on human exploration of the sea, earth and space.

The class website shows photos from the final design contest. (link http://web.mit.edu/2.00a/www/FinalContest)

Other pilot project-based subjects received funding from the DUE d’Arbeloff fund (link http://web.mit.edu/firstyear/2010/explore/spring.html )

The SoE Office of Education Innovation and Assessment is working with DUE education staff in assessing and evaluating the engineering project based subjects, including the project funded by the SoE. Results will be available Fall 2007:

The SoE has funded a project in the Engineering Systems Division for development of an introductory set of subjects for undergraduates in engineering systems design and thinking. The new subject(s) will be piloted in 2007-08.

The SoE funded a stakeholder study of the viability and role that freshman subjects in problem based learning can play in undergraduate education.
