Message from the Dean
Throughout its existence, MIT has been an educational innovator. It has defined new fields of engineering, developed basic textbooks and other course material that have been widely adopted throughout the world, and created entire new approaches to instruction.
Today, emerging fields of inquiry and economic and social environments call for a new round of educational innovations. So does the emergence of teaching technologies that offer unique channels for providing engineering education, the ability to teach in novel ways, and the ability to create innovative content.
The MIT School of Engineering aspires to lead in defining engineering education and engineering practice in the 21st century — to create and deliver significantly different learning experiences for students and to broaden the reach of engineering education. Much is going on in this effort. In fact, this is the most exciting environment for educational innovation I have seen in my 35 years at MIT.
