MIT School of Engineering and School of Science students interested in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.
Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence In Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
In April, the Foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the following academic year. In order to be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their institution. See: Instructions for School of Engineering students Interested in applying.
To be eligible a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class and be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or U.S. national who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. See: Goldwater Foundation requirements or go to the Goldwater web site.
The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of support. In past years, 3-4 MIT students have been awarded the scholarship. See the list of past recipients.
Students who are chosen to go forward to the Foundation will be notified via their undergraduate officer. Details of the pre-screening nomination and selection process can be found at: Instructions for students interested in applying.
