Administrative Resources Site

We're making this material available electronically to serve as a resource manual. A core team of administrative staff in the School, as well as a number of colleagues whose positions support the SoE, spent over a year gathering and preparing the materials that we're pleased to make available here. We've also collected additional feedback from a broader pool of administrative colleagues from around the Institute. Since the administrative processes we're attempting to capture here are both very complex and very dynamic, we realize that at times we are working with a moving target. Thus, we expect this site to serve as a "living document." That is, we expect to continue to add to it and improve it over time. We view your comments about this resource as very important to the process of improvement and look forward to receiving them. Our hope is that you will find this site useful. If our approach helps you navigate more easily through the complexity of administrative tasks you face in the School of Engineering, whether as a relatively new employee or a more experienced one, we will feel that our efforts have been successful.

The School of Engineering has continually garnered top ratings as among the very best engineering schools in the world. We recognize that the extraordinary contributions made by our dedicated staff are key to this success, (something we like to celebrate every year in our Infinite Mile Awards program ). Our primary objective for this new program is to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the DLCs. We expect that providing our staff members with easier access to essential information and offering support and guidance to those in the entry phase of their positions will strongly support this objective.

. . . and Orientation Program

[September 2003] The School of Engineering (SoE) piloted a program for the orientation and support of new administrative officers (AOs). Rather than a substitute for the orientation that Human Resources provides at an Institute-wide level, our program aimed to provide specific assistance to those who carry on the myriad of tasks involved in the functioning of the SoE's departments, divisions, labs, centers, and programs (DLCs, for short).

The SoE's program comprises two components:

  1. A compilation of resource materials organized into two major parts: information that may be of particular interest to those New to the SoE and information about SoE administrative processes in Working in SoE . We anticipate that this will be useful to all SoE staff, that is, both support staff and administrative staff, and long-experienced employees as well as new employees. We've also compiled certain Key Resources for easy reference and added a short section For SoE Managers.
  2. A peer advisor program that pairs a new AO with a more experienced one who has been trained to serve as an advisor.
