For SoE Managers
The School of Engineering would like all new employees who join the School to be informed, supported, acclimated to our culture, and prepared as soon as possible to effectively perform the tasks of their positions. A thoughtfully planned approach to orienting new staff members will help them more quickly become productive contributors.
It is hard to imagine the School continually being rated the very best engineering school in the world without the dedicated, extraordinary contributions made by our staff. The School believes that a well-done orientation program for new administrative officers (AOs) can help ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the DLCs, as well as sidestep potential problem situations. This program, focused on SoE administrative processes, also undergirds the excellence of the School and enhances staff morale. As the Institute launches other new orientation programs for all employees and for new department heads, we expect that our program will dovetail well with these other initiatives.
An effective orientation period for new employees goes well beyond their first few days on the job. It is an ongoing process that evolves over months and requires cooperation among the School, the DLC, and Human Resources. Since one component of the SoE's new orientation for AOs is a peer advisor program that matches a new employee with a trained, more seasoned AO, your new employee will now be guided jointly by both you and a peer through the orientation process.
Here is a checklist to assist you and your colleagues in welcoming and orienting new AOs to your DLC. We in the SoE Dean's Office welcome your questions and your input about both the School's orientation and peer advisor programs.
