UPOP is a tremendous opportunity for government or business employers to engage
an MIT engineering sophomore for 10-12 summer weeks without paying a participation fee.
Being a participating UPOP employer brings many other benefits. There is access to
top engineering talent in an organized, systematic way. There is the high visibility
participating employers achieve with all sophomores in the School of Engineering at MIT.
There is the immediate benefit of engaging students who are prepared to handle
meaningful summer positions because they have been through an intensive one-week '
pre-employment boot camp' at MIT. There is important accountability from the School
of Engineering faculty who must sign off on every student proposal and job experience.
In return, the School of Engineering asks only four things of each employer:
- Assist our students in realizing the educational objectives of UPOP.
- Create meaningful summer positions.
- Help guide students in the preparation of their fall reports.
- Take the time to evaluate and assess both the student and the program once the summer experience has concluded.
