For work with agents that may cause serious disease, the suitability
of BL2+ containment is decided on a case by case basis. The control
of potential biohazards is achieved by strict adherence to BL3
work practices and procedures in a BL2 facility. For new BL2+ laboratory
space renovations, it is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator
to develop plans that meet all appropriate building and safety
codes. Renovation plans will be reviewed and approved by the EHS
Office's Biosafety Program (BSP) and the Committee on Assessment
of Biohazards (CAB) before renovations begin. At the discretion
of the Committee, plans shall be reviewed by an MIT Design Services
architect before final approval. It is important that all personnel
that work in BL2+ facilities understand and adhere to the proper
procedures and techniques outlined in the project BL2+ Biosafety
Manual. BSP and the CAB must approve this BL2+ Biosafety Manual.
Failure to adhere to appropriate practices and procedures may endanger
others. Undergraduate students may not work in BL2+ facilities,
nor handle BL2+ research materials.
