Chemical Safety
From the research laboratory and the machine shop, to the photography darkroom and the janitor's closet, hundreds of chemicals are in use at MIT on any given day. The EHS Office helps raise awareness about the environmental and health risks posed by these substances, educates the MIT community about our commitment to environmental stewardship, provides leadership in efforts to reduce MIT's use of toxic materials, and facilitates a wide range of activities that enable MIT to fulfill and exceed its regulatory obligations.

We assist DLCs in developing procedures that minimize the adverse impact of chemical use. This assistance includes guidance on reducing the use of toxics, purchasing the most environmentally friendly products, storing and using chemicals in a safe manner, implementing controls (such as the use of personal protective equipment and fume hoods), and developing responsible disposal practices.
