Hazardous Waste Handling Procedures for Darkrooms

The following procedures are required of all dark room operations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

  • Spent fixer must be collected from all photo processing operations for on-site silver-recovery prior to being discharged to the sewer. EMP manages a campus silver recovery unit, and will collect your fixer for treatment. Spent Developer may be discharged down drains. Developer may not be mixed with fixer as this will cause damage to the silver recovery unit.
  • Spent fixer should be collected in appropriate containers. No more than 55 gallons of spent fixer should be accumulated at your dark room. If smaller (15 gallon) containers would be sufficient, these are preferred.

The EMP will remove fixer containers when they are full. Call 2-3477 to arrange a pick-up, or use the online form.
