Projects and Exhibits in a Public Spaces

To display art/ projects in a public area

  1. The exhibitor(s) reviews the project and possible hazards with the professor/ supervisor.
  2. Copies and paste* the form (POP UP) into an email message, and fill in the project description and safety information. (*so viruses aren't spread via attachments)
  3. The exhibitor emails the form to one space administrator at a time. (The form describes this step.)
  4. Safety Program (safe-project@mit.edu) reviews the project description received from the space administrator. If the safety issues are complicated, Safety Program will make an appt to discuss the project with the exhibitor and review diagrams, etc.
  5. If the MIT Police Dept approval is needed, the exhibitor will make an appt with MIT Police Dept by phone x3-2996 (fax: x3-8822). The exhibit may have issues such as: exhibitor would be in danger; subject could provoke violence, crime scene enactment that could be mistaken as real, etc.
  6. When all the approvals/ reviews are completed, both the exhibitor and professor/ supervisor will sign the final message. Post the original on or near the project when it is set up.

Important Reminders

The use of exit stairways, roofs of buildings, MIT art & sculptures, Lobby 7, & the MIT Chapel (W15) is PROHIBITED. Non-MIT property must be approved by the owner.

Adhere projects to the wall, floor, window, etc so it doesn't damage the surface or require special cleaning to remove the adhesive. Facilities prohibits the use of Duct tape. Options include Wall Mounting Tabs and Long Mast tape (blue).

To treat foam core poster board with fire retardant: Put the board on a horizontal surface. Spray the back and let it dry. Repeat 3 times. Then apply the poster or art work.
