Hire/Sponsor a Minor (Summary)

The Primary Supervisor, who proposes to hire or sponsor a minor, contacts DLC's Personnel Administrator or Administrative Officer and the DLC EHS Coordinator. The Supervisor should provide a summary of the planned work, including a brief job description and information about the minor including the minor's date of birth and proposed start and end dates of project and hours of work. Advance notice is requested.

The EHS Coordinator will contact the EHS Lead Contact to initiate the review of the project. If the Department is one that doesn't have a Coordinator/ Lead Contact, the Supervisor should send an email with the above information to environment@mit.edu to initiate the review.

We will contact the direct supervisor to schedule an evaluation of the tasks and the work area.

* Many high school students are at MIT as unpaid interns, for academic enhancement, etc. The EHS Office reviews these projects and applies the same principles because the Institute's liability is much greater if minors are injured.

Click here for the Institute's Personnel Policy on the Employment of Minors. This policy states that no one under the age of 16 may be employed. It also describes how MIT will adhere to the legal restrictions on the type of hazardous work that minors may perform.
