Decorating for the Holidays and Special Events

Overview

Your cooperation is requested to ensure everyone's safety when decorating for the Holidays and to comply with Mass. Fire Prevention Regulations.

  • Use the safe type of decorations in offices, suites and other non-public areas.
  • Keep lamps and other heat sources away from decorations.
  • Exit signs and doors must be clearly visible and not obscured by decorations.
  • Maintain access to all exit doors, stairs and corridors.
  • Don't hang decorations from overhead pipes or sprinkler heads.
  • Decorations must be removed as soon as possible after the holiday/ event.

Decorations that are safe or not

SAFE

NOT safe

Decorations that are " UL listed", "flame retardant " or don't burn easily, such as those listed below:

Decorations that burn easily, can ignite nearby items or cannot be effectively treated with flame-retardant, such as:

Artificial trees and wreaths

Ø Natural evergreen trees, wreaths, boughs and other cut greenery

Streamers, paper or fabric decorations

Ø Regular paper, plastic, Styrofoam or fabric decorations

Miniature light bulb strands (for indoors)

Ø Large light bulb strands (get very hot)

Fresh flowers, pumpkins/ gourds, Indoor plants, fruits/ vegetables

Ø Dried flowers/ leaves/ grasses, Corn stalks, hay and straw,

 

SAFE ways to use an extension cord:

UNSAFE uses of an extension cord:

Choose a cord that has a 3-prong plug (grounded), UL listed, heavy duty rating

Ø Narrow cord with a 2 prong plug (easily overheats)

Plug cord into a wall outlet

Ø Plugged into another extension cord, multi-outlet strip or tap (overloads circuit)

Run cords in low traffic areas along the edge of the wall and under tables.

Secure to the floor or to table legs

Ø Across aisles, corridors or stairs

Ø Under rugs

Ø Through or across doorways

Ø Dangling above the floor

Tape and adhesives

Facilities prohibits the use of duct tape . It leaves a sticky residue, removes paint and floor finish. Use removable tapes and adhesives, such as: Long Mast blue masking tape, Gaffer tape for carpets, poster tape, mounting adhesive putty and tabs. Obtain from Office Depot and local stores.

Candles

Candles are only allowed for religious ceremonies in designated areas and are prohibitied as decorations by the Mass Fire Prevention regulations. Safer alternatives include electronic flicker candles, flashlights and battery-operated lanterns.

Locations where decorations are not permitted without a Safety Program review:

  • Atriums
  • Auditoriums, Classrooms and other large rooms
  • Corridors
  • Exit Doorways
  • Lobbies
  • Stairways

Responsibility for safety

The Safety Program requests that the group that is decorating assign someone to be responsible for following through on the applicable safety precautions.
