Model Rocket Launches
Approval Process Description:
- Reserve Briggs Field through DAPER
The sponsor reserves 2 fields in advance to create a buffer zone
so the rockets don’t fly into Vassar Street or into fields
where other activities are taking place. Please contact
Sandy Lett (slett@mit.edu)
at least 2 weeks in advance to check on field availability and
make your tentative reservation. Students make reservations.
This is contingent upon approval from Athletics and EHS of your
safety plan.
Helpful hints:
Schedule this event during the week because the
fields are busy during the weekends. You will also need to hire
a Police Details for crowd control if you choose to schedule
this event during the weekend. Information for Police Details
is on http://web.mit.edu/cp/www/directory.htm
Because
of the irrigation system on the fields, the placement of stakes
must be first approved by Crystal Houston (chouston@mit.edu),
who is the Building and Grounds Supervisor for Athletics.
- Write
Safety Plan
The sponsor tailors the safety plan template to describe their
activity (delete the sections that are not applicable) and emails
this to safe-project@mit.edu. Additionally,
if the launch is part of an MIT class, the faculty sponsor should
assign someone to be responsible for the safety plan, and consult
with the academic department’s EHS coordinator (see this
link for list of EHS departmental coordinators: http://web.mit.edu/environment/training/dlc_coordinators.html
Either
the DSL or departmental EHS Coordinator will work with the Safety
Program to review the safety plan and make recommendations to finalize
it, if necessary.
- Communicate Finalized Safety Plan
Once EHS approves the safety plan, the sponsor sends the plan
to Sandy Lett (slett@mit.edu). Athletics
will give final approval or they may have additional requirements.
Sandy
sends the sponsor a Field Confirmation and the procedure for
weather-related cancellations.
Once the field reservation has
been confirmed, the sponsor sends the final version of the safety
plan to the EHS Office (safety@mit.edu),
EHS Coordinator(s), MIT Police (cp-command@mit.edu)
and Athletics (slett@mit.edu, chouston@mit.edu).
EHS
(Safety Program responder for that week) will send the safety
plan to the on-call team a few days before the launch date.
