Key Performance Objectives

The following list identifies the objectives that you are expected to learn from this training program and take back with you to practice in your workplace.

  1. Identify the basic requirements of the various water pollution control programs including: National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), EPA Oil Pollution Prevention Regulations (40 CFR 112), Clean Charles 2005 Project, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Programs, and the City of Cambridge Wastewater Programs.
  2. Define water pollution and provide several common examples of materials prohibited for release. Identify drainage paths for water and oil pollutants to make their way from the MIT campus to the Charles River and Boston Harbor.
  3. Be able to locate the MIT-specific Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan and useful reference materials related to water pollution prevention and control as needed on the job.
  4. Identify conditions constituting a potential oil spill hazard. Store and maintain oil to prevent release.
  5. Access and use appropriate reference information to support oil spill response, including assessing hazards of specific oil spills and responding according to your training.
  6. Locate and use appropriate oil spill control material or equipment for controlling and cleaning up a minor oil spill.
  7. Follow proper procedures in the event of an oil spill, including assessing spill severity and contacting the proper authorities.
