Handling Waste Oil in Drums

Drum
The drums used to store waste oil should be DOT approved. Avoid storing oil in drums that are rusty, dented or may leak at a future time.

Storage
The area where the drums are to be stored should be a suitable inside area that is preferably cool and dry. Secondary containment is required for all oil containers.

Signs
The waste oil storage area must have a sign stating "WASTE OIL" in letters at least l" high.

Labels
Each waste oil drum must be clearly marked and labeled with all of the following: "HAZARDOUS WASTE", "WASTE OIL", and "TOXIC".

Storage Period
If the oil is being collected in an EMP approved less-than-90-day area, there is a 90-day storage limit from the accumulation date. Waste oil drums must be removed within the 90-day period.
