Software Tools for Environmental Field Study (STEFS). Enrique R. Vivoni and

Undergraduate seminar tailored to environmental engineering majors interested in developing a mobile computing software product for field study applications. Weekly seminars will cover topics related to mobile computing platforms, programming and design of applications for Windows CE, interfacing environmental and geopositioning sensors, graphical user interfaces and mobile Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Additional topics related to environmental field sampling, hydrologic modeling, GIs and field testing of the software product will be covered. Subject also includes selected guest lecturers. A team programming project designed to enhance and add functionality to product prototype is required. Limited enrollment, preference given to students planning to attend IAP Field Trip.

Watershed Pollution in the Hunter and Williams River Watersheds, Australia

Undergraduate subject taught experimentally; special subjects offered by visiting faculty; seminars on topics of current interest. We will be traveling to Australia and doing research on saltwater contamination due to irrigation practices of the Williams River and analyzing issues of watershed management within the context of the environmental and socio-economic setting. In addition, the mobile computing tools developed during a Fall Term Undergraduate Seminar "Software Tools for Environmental Field Study" will be field-tested. The handheld tools will include capabilities for geopositioning, mobile mapping, as well as interfacing water quality and quantity instruments. Departure on January 10 and return January 26. Course requirements will include attendance to Fall Seminar and/or supplementary preparation work for the Field Program. Lodging and food will be provided. Airfare will be subsidized.
