Microsoft I-campus Seminar (03/25/02):
Real-time Field Data Streaming: Development, testing and application in the Williams River, Australia.
E.R. Vivoni, ENVIT Founder and President
The ENVIT Student Group at MIT has developed technology for streaming real-time field data collection through the MIT/Microsoft i-Campus "Software Tools for Environmental Field Studies" project. Recent advances in mobile computing and wireless communications have enabled us to development of tools to assist mobile field workers in improving the data collection process. The integrated system consists of multiple software applications (SQL, SQL CE, eVB) and hardware components that enable wireless, mobile and Internet computing during field campaigns within the context of a cartographic GIS display. In addition, wireless (802.11b and GSM) and Internet (.NET) technologies are used for transferring and displaying collected data while still in the field. A prototype system has been completed and tested in field trials in Boston and Newcastle, Australia. Field studies demonstrated the noticeable gains achieved with the use of the data collection system. Commercialization potential exists for environmental, utilities and asset management, including the emergency disaster response.
