Development of
Mobile Applications for Environmental Field Studies
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Faculty Supervisor: Prof. Dara Entekhabi, Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory
Seeking a highly-motivated UROP researcher to aid in the development of software
applications for PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) to be used for environmental
field data collection and processing. The goals of the research project are
to create an Electronic Field Notebook and integrate various existing technologies
(GIS/GPS/sensors) into a compact and usable package. Prototype development will
be followed by a field deployment and testing. The application to be created
will be focused towards water quantity and quality sampling in rivers and inland
water bodies. The candidate should be familiar with Visual Basic/C/C++ programming
and development. Experience with the Windows CE operating system or other mobile
platforms is a plus. This is a unique opportunity to form part of a student-run

Spring 2002:
Intefacing
a multi-parameter water quality probe

Seeking an experienced undergraduate for interfacing a water quality probe to the ENVIT Field Data Collection system. The undergraduate has preferably completed the course 1.992 Software Tools for Environmental Field Study and has programming experience in eMbedded Visual Basic of Windows CE 3.0. Familiarity with the Hydrolab Minisonde instrument a plus. Team work will be required as part of the work. This is a unique opportunity to form part of a student-run I-campus project.
