2006-2007 MIT Equestrian Team Lesson Contract

Equestrian Team Commitment Agreement Fall 2005

Every member of the MIT Equestrian Team is required to read and sign this form in order to participate. Joining this team is a semester-long commitment.

The MIT Equestrian Team is a competitive body. We have specific goals and requirements. A commitment from each member is vital to our survival. This team requires participation in every aspect of intercollegiate riding, from fundraising to team workout sessions. It is not just a way for students to take riding lessons.

The most important commitment we demand is attendance. Rising Star Equestrian Center has a policy that requires 24 hours notice prior to canceling a lesson. We as a team, extend this policy further. We expect every team member to attend all meetings and competitions. If, for some reason, you cannot attend, you must contact the president (Martha Rendeiro) or the Captain (Ashleigh Crowell) at least 24 hours prior to the event. We understand that this is MIT, where academics come first, and there will be times that you simply cannot adjust your schedule. However, you must give us notice on such occasions. This is a team sport, and we all depend on each other, both in and out of the arena. Potential team members who foresee missing more than two shows or meetings this semester are ineligible to participate.

Horseback riding is a physically demanding sport. To ensure our safety as riders, as well as improve our fitness, team members will be required to attend one lesson per week.

Horseback riding is a monetarily demanding sport. Fundraising is vital for the team, regardless of your individual financial status. Although we would like everyone to participate in each fundraising effort, we only require that you volunteer to work one each semester, and contribute to the planning of all.

Because transportation is an integral part of our lesson schedule, drivers assume an added responsibility. Each member of a lesson group depends upon their driver. If you foresee a conflict with your driving responsibilities, you must immediately inform not only the team president, but also the rest of your lesson group. Along the same lines, non-driving team members must be prepared to find another means of transportation or possibly reschedule their lesson.

We know that everyone has a unique riding style and approach to the sport. However, as a team, we need to be unified. This will require a willingness to adjust and be open to new instruction. Trust is essential in this sport, and you absolutely must respect the team coach. In addition to the coach, you must respect your teammates. This includes fulfilling fundraising obligations, attending team functions and showing your support at competitions regardless of whether or not you are competing.

Communication is essential to any team. If you have any questions, problems or concerns please contact the president or captain right away. The easiest way for us to communicate as a team is through the Equestrian Club Conference on First Class. All important information will be posted there. Check it daily.

We look forward to an exciting season of equestrian events. Good luck and have a great semester!

I, ____________________ have read the above Commitment Agreement, and in signing this document, agree to abide by its principles.
