Problem
The removal of the eye crystalline lens reduces the organ's structural integrity and
exposes the critical vitreous body to injury during implantaion of an intraocular lens. A
lens design was desired that would allow the lens to be implanted prior to the
extraction of the cataract and not interfere with the operation.
Solution
The lens shown in the photograph has the desired characteristics. In addition, it is
made of grafted polymethylmethacrylate to reduce reflections. The lens is supported
only at one side by the loop legs and elastically pivots to allow the cryoextraction of the
diseased crystalline. Viscosurgery using sodium hyaluronate (HEALON) prevents
corneal endothelium abrasion during cryoextraction. Design has been successfully
tested by Dr. David Miller, of Beth-Israel Hospital, on rabbits.
