"It ’s an all-too-common set of experiences – having a
question for a lecturer, but not being seen in order to
ask it, or even worse, being lost during a lecture, but
not wanting to admit it. What if there were an impersonal way to ask the
instructor to repeat a point, without appearing dumb in front of the rest of
the class?
That ’s the idea behind the Classroom Communicator,
a student I-campus project led by Eric Brittain, a doctoral candidate in the
MIT Lab for Computer Science."

| Graduate student Eric Brittain is designing a system to make it easier for
students in classrooms to communicate in real time with their instructors
during lectures. |
| Using a small, wireless device Mr. Brittain calls the Classroom
Communicator, a student will be able to signal the lecturer that he is
confused or has a specific question. Putting the shoe on the other foot, an
instructor could plan to send out a quick multiple-choice question over the
device at a certain point in a lecture to see how well the students are
following. |

| Members of the Black Student Graduate
Association submitted the proposal, “Classroom Communicator,” an idea to
create a question-and-answering system in classes. Using a small handheld
device, students would be able to enter the text of their questions, which would
then be transmitted through a wireless network to a central computer that a
lecturer could use to enhance his or her presentation. |
| Abelson said the “Classroom Communicator” is a proposal that can be
easily implemented, perhaps even for lectures next fall. |
