On the Spot Awards Are Given for Going Above and Beyond

“Making A Difference” is an on-the-spot Appreciation Award that recognizes the above and beyond contributions of an individual, who on a day-to-day basis, makes a difference while completing his or her normal duties. The award will be a $20 gift certificate. An individual may receive up to three (3) Appreciation Awards each fiscal year.

Managers and supervisors will be able to present an Appreciation Award at anytime. Also, employees may wish to recognize a colleague, supervisor or manager for above and beyond performance. In this case, the employee can request a gift certificate for presenting from his or her manager, the division director, or from the department’s human resources staff.

We welcome our customers and colleagues from other departments of the MIT community to recognize the efforts of employees who make a difference. You can request that a gift certificate be presented on your behalf by sending an email with a brief reason for the recognition to dof-rr@mit.edu.

Appreciation Awards may be presented for the following criteria:

  • For consistently, over an extended period of time, providing outstanding performance and/or customer service, for exemplifying a willingness to be a team member, for conducting his/her day-to-day interaction at all levels in a positive manner, and that would be considered a role model.
  • For receiving recognition from customers or colleagues in the performance of his/her job that demonstrates initiative and exceeding expectations in the delivery of services.
  • For identifying a safety hazard and taking an active role in responding to and correcting the problem.
  • For performing the job admirably under out of the ordinary conditions.
  • For developing and implementing a solution to a small or recurring problem.
  • For identifying and taking action that prevented an error or problem.
  • For volunteering to get involved with work outside his/her normal activities and/or to volunteer to work extended hours to meet his/her department’s goals in the service of MIT.
  • For being an ambassador by extending a helping hand to a member of the community, staff, or visiting public.
