Frequently Asked Questions About Commuter Options

I'd like to join a carpool. How can I find out if there's one near me?

Check out the website, MassRIDES, a statewide ride-matching and transportation information source. Also see the car and vanpool information on this site.

What is the MIT/VPSI Vanpool Subsidy Program?

The MIT/VPSI Vanpool Subsidy Program is a program designed to encourage employees to travel to MIT by van. The vans accommodate either 9 or 15 people.

A completed enrollment form must be received by the Parking and Transportation Office no later than the 1st of the month prior to the month in which enrollment is to begin.

To terminate enrollment, send written notice to the MIT Parking and Transportation Office no later than the 1st of the month prior to the month in which enrollment is to terminate.

Who is eligible for the MIT/VPSI Vanpool Subsidy Program?

MIT regular salaried and hourly employees are eligible to participate in the MIT/VPSI Vanpool Subsidy Program. Employees who are classified as temporary or casual are not eligible. Please note that employees may only participate in one MIT subsidized transportation program.

How does the program’s subsidy work?

The maximum monthly vanpool benefit is $105. The benefit is composed of two components: a $59 MIT subsidy and up to a $46, pre tax payroll deduction. The monthly vanpool benefit cannot exceed the actual cost of the service.

Eligible employees will have up to $46/month withheld from their regular pay on a pre tax basis. Each month’s contribution will be withheld from the first weekly pay check of each month.

How does billing work for MIT carpools?

One member of the carpool must be identified as the primary member and is responsible for payment. The primary member may choose payroll deduction or pay by cash or check and is therefore responsible for the full amount. Other members reimburse the primary member for their shares.
