Current Practices in Graduate Student Administration

In support of the Graduate Student Council's efforts to improve the graduate student academic experience, MIT's graduate administrators assembled this information as a resource for documenting current practices for graduate students and inspiring new ones.

The practices listed here are organized by theme and size of program, as determined by the total number of graduate students. Future iterations will include the degree level of each program (for example, SM or PhD).

This is an evolving document, to be updated on regular basis. Over time, issues and priorities change, and current practices will reflect that. The graduate administrators hope that many departments find practices they can usefully adopt, or adapt, to improve graduate student life in their areas.

To contribute your current departmental practice, please contact graduate administrator Brian Canavan, Department of Physics, at bcanavan@mit.edu.

Please see articles in the MIT Faculty Newsletter for a description of the study undertaken by the Graduate Student Council [Improving the Graduate Student Academic Experience ] and the response by graduate administrators [New Resource on Faculty Website: Current Practices]
