Finding Community

Diversity: Living in the Boston Area

Resources for Asian and South Asian American Faculty and Their Families

Asian Americans altogether are one of the fastest growing populations in the Boston area. Most of the growth is occurring in Boston, as well as towns like Malden, Shrewsbury, Quincy, Burlington and Waltham. Asian Americans are about 12 percent of Cambridge's population.

As a result, you'll easily find authentic restaurants and markets with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cambodian, Thai, Laotian and Filipino foods. Porter Exchange in the Porter Square section of Cambridge, for example, houses Japanese restaurants and a grocery store, a bakery and a bubble tea stand, as well as a Korean restaurant and market. Boston has the third largest Chinatown in the U.S. with a variety of restaurants, shops and nightlife.

The area has many native-language newspapers, Asian cultural centers like the Cambridge Center for Chinese Culture, and social and recreational groups, such as a local chapter of Asian Outdoors.

There is also a strong South Asian community in the Boston and Cambridge area, particularly at MIT and Harvard. There are established South Asian communities in Cambridge and the Back Bay area of Boston, as well as in suburbs like Framingham (many first-generation families), Lowell, Waltham and Arlington.
