Fall 2008 Pre-Registration
Starting on Thursday, May 1, you may begin to pre-register on WebSIS for your Fall term subjects. Fall term subjects are listed in the Online Subject Listing and Schedule. You may also participate in the HASS-D lottery for Fall while pre-registering on WebSIS. Supplemental descriptions of HASS-D subjects are available online.
REMINDER: To avoid a fine, all continuing students must pre-register online as completely as possible by Thursday, May 29.
Your freshman advisor will not sign any forms. Your new Departmental advisor will sign your Fall 2008 Registration Form (based on your pre-registration) on Tuesday, September 2, Registration Day.
You should, however, talk with your freshman advisor about your Fall semester classes, especially if you still need to finish any of the freshman Science Core subjects that may be a prerequisite to upper-level subjects.
It's up to you to find the information you need for pre-registration: What subjects are appropriate to start your major? What are the pre-requisites for those subjects? What area might you begin to choose for your HASS Concentration? Good resources for this information are the degree charts on this site's Choice of Major pages, the MIT Bulletin, and the undergraduate administrator for your new department.
Undesignated Sophomores
If you are still an Undesignated Sophomore in September, you will register with your Undesignated Sophomore advisor on Registration Day, Tuesday, September 2. Who your advisor will be in September depends on
- whether you are continuing with your freshman advisor, or
- whether you've indicated a preference for an advisor in a department that interests you (not available in Courses 6, 15, and 20).
As an undesignated sophomore, you have until the end of your sophomore year to choose a major, but you can declare your major at any time through a Change of Course form, available at UAAP, 7-104 or SSC, 11-120.
Advanced Standing Examinations
If you’re considering taking an Advanced Standing Exam in August or September, you need to be in touch with the academic department to find out whether a specific exam is being offered and if you are eligible. Advanced Standing Examinations may be taken only by students who have never been registered for or attended class at MIT in the subject concerned. You must submit a written petition to take an Advanced Standing Examination.
Complete information on Advanced Standing Exams can be found in the Schedules section of the Registrar’s Office site: http://web.mit.edu/registrar/www/schedules/advst.html.
