International Examination Credit

If you have taken the following examinations or similar tests and wish to receive MIT credit, your scores or grades must be submitted to MIT for evaluation:

International Examination Credit is granted consistent with the practices described for the AP and transfer credit. Below are current policies on how credit is awarded based on the type of examination, subject, and score(s).

These policies are specific to the Class of 2011, and are subject to change for subsequent entering classes.

NOTE: If you receive credit for a specific MIT subject and subsequently register for the same subject, the credit originally awarded is void.

GCE A-Level

GCE A-Level credit is recognized based on the exam subject and resulting grade. Credit for A-level work cannot be applied to your MIT academic record until your official GCE certificates are presented to the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP) for review.

Provisional “statements of results” and other non-official reports will not be accepted in lieu of official certificates. In the event that you will not receive your official certificates until later in the academic year, you may "self-report" your A-level grades to UAAP staff. Self-reported A-level grades are listed on your Online Freshman Folder, but are not applied to your WebSIS record until your official A-level certificates are reviewed by the UAAP.

Current policies on GCE A-Level credit award are listed below.

  • Biology:

  • Chemistry:

  • Computer Science:

    • No credit is given for A-Level Computer Science examinations.

  • Mathematics:

    • A grade of A or B in A-Level Mathematics entitles you to 12 units of credit for 18.01, Calculus I. No credit is given for grades lower than B.

    • If you receive 18.01 credit through GCE A-level mathematics, but elect to take 18.01A (often a wise precaution), 3 units of general elective credit will be awarded in place of the 12 units of 18.01 credit. You also will receive 12 units of credit for a passing grade in 18.01A.

    • If you receive 18.01 credit through GCE A-level mathematics, but elect to take 18.014, Calculus with Theory, 9 units of general elective credit will be awarded in place of the 12 units of 18.01 credit. You also will receive 12 units of credit for a passing grade in 18.014.

  • Physics:

    • For a grade of A in A-Level Physics, credit will be given for 12 units of subject 8.01, Physics I, and you may enroll in subject 8.02 or 8.022 (Physics II).

    • If you take and pass 8.012 (advanced version of 8.01), the 12 units of 8.01 credit earned for A-Level Physics will convert to 6 general elective units, and you receive 12 units of credit for a passing grade in 8.012. For grades lower than A, no credit is given.

  • Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences:

    • For a grade of A on applicable humanities-related A-Level examinations, credit will be given for 9 general elective units.

    • Note that credit earned from GCE A-Levels does not satisfy any part of the HASS Requirement.

    • For grades lower than A, no credit is given.

International Baccalaureate

Below are current policies on how International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are evaluated. MIT must receive your official grade report directly from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) before credit can be processed.
