Choice of Major Timeline
Before Declaring After Declaring

Undecided

I have no idea what I want to major in! How do I decide? I’m declaring undesignated because I’m still unsure of what I want to major in. What do I need to know?

Decided

I think I know what I want to major in. How and when do I declare my major? I have declared my major. What’s next?

There are so many options and one is surely right for you… but which one?

When evaluating your options, be sure you’re asking yourself all the important questions. Here are some tips about what to consider and some myths about choosing a major.

At this point your primary focus is to choose one, and only one, major. However, there are other things you may want to keep in mind. Click here to find out more about Double Majors, Major Departures, and Minors.

The Careers Office website has additional resources including an in-depth look at major specific career information, to give you an idea of what you can do in the real world with each major, and a Choice of Major Decision Making Table.

Declaring Your Major: A Short Timeline

  • Mid-March – Advisors receive the Course (major) Selection Forms for their advisees.

Meet with your advisor to discuss your choice and complete the form. You must turn in the Course Selection Form to the Student Services Center (Room 11-120).

  • By April 17, 2009…

You must file a Course Selection Form by April 17, 2009 to either declare a major department or if you are undecided declare yourself as an undesignated sophomore. However, you must declare a major by the end of your sophomore year.

Still Unsure?

That’s OK. You have until the end of your sophomore year to decide. However, remember to still fill out a course selection form indicating your choice: “undeclared.” Until you find the right major for you, you can either choose to keep the advisor you have or request to be assigned an advisor from a department that is of interest to you (except course 6 or 15).

Contact your current advisor to determine what kind of advising would be best for you in the upcoming year.

When considering your options, remember to take advantage of the resources available to you.

Once you’ve chosen a major…

You can start planning for your sophomore year!

Even though you don’t know your advisor yet, and will likely not know him or her for several months after choosing your major, you can still become involved in the department by becoming familiar with these sources of additional support and information:
