First-Year Subjects

This section gives you important information on the subjects you will take during your freshman year, as well as information on freshman credit limits, grading policies, and the learning communities, which offer alternative pathways through the freshman year.

Normally you will complete most of the Science Core and at least two of the eight required Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) subjects in your first year. One of your first-year HASS subjects must be designated communication intensive (CI) and will count toward the Communication Requirement.

You should also begin the Physical Education Requirement in your first year. Restricted Electives in Science and Technology (REST) and laboratory subjects are usually taken in your second and third years.
