First-Year Academics
This section provides information on first-year subjects, as well as details on freshman credit limits, first-year grading policies, advanced placement, international examination, and transfer credit, plus information on the learning communities, which offer alternative pathways through the freshman year.
The General Institute Requirements (GIRs) page shows which subjects satisfy the GIRs, including video presentations from faculty on your subject options.
- As a freshman, normally you will complete most of the Science Core (Calculus, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry) and at least two of the eight required Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) subjects.
- One of your HASS subjects must also fulfill the Communication Requirement.
- You should also begin the Physical Education Requirement in your first year.
- Restricted Electives in Science and Technology (REST) and laboratory subjects are usually taken in your second and third years.
