Helping Freshmen Get the Help They Need

The following tips are provided to help you in your work with your advisees.

  • When freshmen begin to struggle and they can’t possibly get out of their hole by themselves, it is time for them to realize that help in their best option.

  • Provide guidance and make them aware of when and where help is available.

  • Make sure they know that it won’t be easy, but they can succeed.

  • Be honest and don’t sugarcoat their academic problems.

  • Let them know about the consequences of not getting help.

  • Be positive at all times and let them know that you are there for them.

  • Make sure they know that it is not a negative thing to seek help, that everyone does it at some point in their college career.

  • Talk about your personal experiences and tips that helped you.

Helping Freshmen through their Pre-finals Anxiety

  • Tell them to do something non-academic to take their minds off of studying so they do not burn out.

  • Encourage them to manage their study time with schedules, planners, etc.

  • Direct them to tutors, TA’s, and their professors for extra help.

  • Remind them to sleep, eat a balanced diet, exercise, and relax.

  • Do not over caffeinate with coffee or soda.
