Associate Advisor Responsibilities

The following information is designed to provide you with guidelines to assist you in fulfilling your role as an Associate Advisor.  Remember that you are mentors to your advisees for the entire academic year.

Responsibilities to Advisee(s):

  • Maintain regular contact with your advisee(s), AT LEAST twice per month.
  • Inform advisees of resources available throughout campus (e.g. study skills, tutoring, etc.).
  • Assist with class selection, registration and choice of major.
  • Assist with time management, test taking, and study skills.
  • Help with finding UROPs, IAP and/or summer employment.
  • Assist advisee(s) in planning their first-year at MIT.
  • Monitor the academic progress of your advisees and direct them to additional resources when appropriate.
  • Organize social activities (e.g. dinners, museum visits, and trips into Boston).

Responsibilities to Advisor:

  • Meet with your Advisor to discuss advising duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain communication and a good working relationship with the Advisor.
  • Provide coverage for the Advisor, if requested (i.e. register advisees when s/he is unavailable, etc.).
  • Attend all seminars for seminar-based groups or scheduled meetings with advisees.
